How does auto brightness work on an iPhone?
There is an ambient light sesor right above the stereo speaker on the iPhone 7 Plus and older models too. You can see that clearly in a white front iPhone. What this sensor does is that it looks at the amount of light in your surroundings and then adjusts the screen brightness accordingly so that you can see the screen clearly. Try putting you hand on the sensor it will dim the screen thinking that your surroundings are darker.

Phone Brightness Dim?
I dropped my android in water and took it out immediately. I took out the sim card, and the battery and placed everything in a box of dried rice for 1 day. I took it out the next day and it was working fine, then suddenly, the brightness just dimmed. Now I can barely see the screen. When I press hard on the screen I can see something, don't know if its water or plastic or something. And When I press hard on the screen, the brightness improves a bit.
Is there a known problem with Auto-Brightness on the iPhone 5?
I've been following the news around the iPhone 5 fairly closely and haven't heard about this issue.Perhaps it would be worth it to drop by an Apple store and compare with another device and have them look at it.

I guess you should define “fluctuate”. Is it changing brightness quickly and erratically or is is it slow and gradual? Did this just happen all of a sudden, possibly following a drop or other impact?Have you tried to do a hard reset (hold the Power and Home button for 10 seconds)? I would suspect a defective screen backlight based on the little information given but it could also be caused by something on the logic board.
