They don't. Engagement rings are not usually a spontaneous buy, and not a quick purchase. Usually marking something 30% off is to get you to go in a purchase something you wouldn't have. It makes the company go into the black. Jewelry stores have a very large profit markup so they are usually not in the red in order to need a large day that takes them in the black. Especially since jewelry is something you negotiate with on the spot, its the same price year round. If they did a big sale, you'd still try to negotiate. Also it takes several hours with a jeweler to get the perfect ring. Most men aren't going to pick an inferior ring just b/c that one is marked down. They want the perfect ring for that perfect woman.
Is the outrage/mockery of Black Friday and Thanksgiving day shopping a form of classism? It appears many of the shoppers are of lower economic status and likely enticed by the chance to purchase things they couldn't afford the rest of the year.
I'd ask, isn't it far more classist to presume that people of limited means are for some reason required to act like animals? This isn't about teasing someone starving with a piece of bread. As a rule, we're talking about superfluous consumption of stuff no one needs. I was working at Target during the "Tickle Me Elmo" debacle of the late '90s. The doll was really stupid and annoying, and no one really wanted it or cared about it. We had endcaps full of these things, and they remained full of these things. I remember this very clearly owing to the lure when bored at 3 AM to set a number of them off all at once, thus making them shove one another off the shelf. On Black Friday, both Target and Walmart (at the very least) lowered the price from $30 to $20. Suddenly people went ape shit, and the quickly sold out. Now it made a situation where a bunch of people had planned to buy it for $20, and when they couldn't, they suddenly decided they were worth far more in their minds. So even when the price went back up to $30, people who didn't look at it twice a few weeks earlier suddenly put this in the "have to have!" file in their brain, and no one could keep them on the shelves. The entire ordeal is a simple consumer frenzy wherein consumers that succumb to the frenzied state take leave of their senses. Money itself has little to nothing to do with it. But if people are acting like animals, feel free to call them animals and heap any appropriate disdain you feel for such behavior. Low income is no excuse to behave like that (and I'm talking about the shoving, pushing, elbowing petty BS where people behave in unsafe or violent manners over crap they don't need; not everyone who shops on Black Friday does any of that stuff, and the majority of shoppers still comport themselves properly and like human beings). And speaking as a former broke ass that was on the shitty wage side of the retail frenzy equation, I saw plenty of people going batshit buying stuff that I could not have afforded to buy. Save your pity for the poor bastards having to work in retail during Black Friday.
