Along its western border is the magnificent and historic Hudson River with several historic river towns: Tarrytown, Irvington, and Sleepy Hallow (yes, of Headless Horseman fame) being some of the most well known. To the east lies the Long Island Sound and then the state of Connecticut. To the north lies Putnam County, NY, a more rural county. To the south lies NYC, specifically the borough and county of the Bronx. The county is known for its high taxes and high real-estate but also has great public schools, parks, roads, and beaches to show for it plus a relatively easy commute to Manhattan compared to some of the other counties in the region. Staten Island was its own city, and was not connected by roads to the rest of today's city, because the bridge that now connects Staten Island to Brooklyn had not been built. Brooklyn was its own city. When they merged the original New York City (Manhattan), Brooklyn, Richmond (Staten Island), and the western part of Queens County, to form greater New York City, they kept most of the old county boundaries - except that they split Queens County into two Counties: Queens and Nassau. The new city has five counties, for no real reason, other than because the counties were formed when the city was much smaller.
