Communism:- People doing what they are capable of, people getting what they need and government balancing welfare of each. Capitalism:- Individual taking his own economic decision to maximise his welfare.I won’t get into the definition of Communism and Capitalism because the real world example would digress here and there from the given definition. Instead I would get into how following these ideologies shapes the behaviour of economy. So there are many differences among capitalist and communist system but the main difference depends upon the factor who takes the production decisions and who actually produces the output in the country.In the case of communism, most of the production decisions like who will sell what, at what price, at what quantity, are taken by government. And also the priority sector goods like infrastructure, heavy machines and other such things are produced by government. In most of the cases it has been observed that communist countries have been unable to keep up with capitalist countries, productivity takes a hit because of lack of competition, choices are limited because most of the products are made by single producer, and the level of income stays low because contact with other countries is kept to minimum. A somewhat appropriate answer would be India before 1991 as it had all the qualities I mentioned above.Capitalism is the system where individuals are free to decide what they want to produce, at whatever price **cough Apple cough**, in whatever quantity. And even the priority goods are produced by individuals, like how considerable amount of prisons in America are privately owned. In most of the cases it is observed that Basic needs like education, health care and food are expensive. Health care is the biggest concern, a visit of cancer would send a common man on a trip to bankruptcy(not if you know how to make drugs), However, lot of capitalist countries have health benefits in place to check this issue. A classic example of capitalist system would be USA.Now to sum it up, it is useless to decide between communism and capitalism as there is no perfect example for any of them, for example even in the biggest capitalist country, USA, there are measures for social welfare and in the biggest communist country, China, production is done by private industries. Rather we should be focusing on the individual factors that are responsible for greater loss.

Recently governments across the world had to nationalise banks in order to prop them up because they were failing, but they are still run in the same way, i.e. as business and not as services and their function is to make a profit. Socialism / communism are the same thing - a society where goods are produced to meet our needs and not to make a profit and where we all have a fair share of the wealth and do a fair share of the work. Socialism is democratically run from below without state intervention. In Russia, there were soviets, i.e. workers' committees, which democratically decided on how to run things, without needless bureacuracy or management from above. Wealth would be shared equally amongst everybody. However, this was quickly betrayed by Stalin after the death of Lenin in 1924. Communism is often confused with Stalinism - that is dictatorial control from above, with a small elite who profited whilst others were not given a fair share of the wealth. However, there was less inequality than under capitalism. There was a ruthless secret police force and society was very undemocratic. However, this is not true socialism - it is totalitarianism - rule by a clique of bureaucrats. However, Stalinism did have a central planned economy. Real socialism is democratic, egalitarian and more efficient than capitalism. There are no socialist countries in the world at the moment. For a brief period after the Russian Revolution (from 1918-24), Russia had the potential to be socialist, but an invasion by 20 capitalist countries and the betrayal of Stalin prevented this from happening. Spain during the Spanish Civil War in 1936 also had the potential to become socialist, but internal fighting among the left and a refusal of Stalinist Russia to back the revolution prevented it from winning. Hungary 1956, France 1968 and Portugal 1976 are other examples of revolutions which failed to bring about socialism.

How would you explain Communism, Communalism and Socialism to a 10 year old child?
I have told my son that communism is the idea that the government exists for one purpose: to look after the citizens of the country. Everyone has food, a place to live, a job to do, and freedom to learn despite the life they were born into. I explain that taxes are collected and used for the common good, not to build a war machine to exploit for corporations and destroy our neighbors. When he gets a little older I will explain that yes, there have been states that claimed they were communist, but sadly they got off track and turned into dictatorships just like the capitalist/fascist states that far outnumber the socialist ones today. I have put it in this way...The first people who tried to fly failed. The first attempts we made to go into space failed. It's wise to strive for perfection in all walks of life, including the nurturing of communism.I will explain that there has not been an ideal communist state as of yet, (in my opinion), but that they are coming, hopefully with his generation.
