What Is It That We Don

How much do we know about what we don't know?

I once read a short story about a highly advanced alien species that had complete mastery over everything and left a system that would give answers to everything asked. Now you might think that this was kept secret but it wasn’t. Everyone knew where it was and anyone could go up near the planet and ask questions. However the only response given was that the question was invalid and couldn’t be answered. This was because the aliens were so advanced that everyone else didn’t know enough to know what to ask as the basis for their science and ideas were wrong.Basically to ask anything you would first have to have an initial understanding of the concept. So if there is something that is far beyond anything that we know it isn’t even possible to start asking questions about it without first understanding its existence. In other words we know there is a lot of knowledge that a single person will never have time to study and even more that we are not sure about. Yet while we are understanding more each day. There is an even greater unfathomable amount of information that we cannot even begin to ask simply because we lack the capacity to even be aware of its existence.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~If anyone knows where this short story comes from let me know so I can properly credit it.

Gay Apparel- Bright and festive clothing, carries the conotation of being happy during christmas (but in reality is just a busy sweater that no one can tell if it gets egg nogg vomit on it)

Don-Knotts...Mr. Roeper....always on the lookout for queer apparel

I'l be wearing my usual cordaroys and saddle shoes, as if it werent gay enough, the leather vest and biker hat will get the point across

What does "we don't rent no pigs" mean?

It means they DO rent pigs. If they don't rent NO pigs, then the DO rent some pigs. The old English double negative making a positive.

Why do we desire things we don't have?

User-9917056854484213371 alluded to the correct answer.Human brains are wired to adapt to everything in its environment. If you haven’t had chocolate in a while, you will experience a dopamine spike upon eating chocolate again. This is essentially a chemical reaction in your brain which produces the feeling: “Mmm yup, I need one more”. However, as you continue to eat this chocolate, the dopamine spike will weaken accordingly. What happens is that the dopamine receptors responsible for giving you this feeling are getting desensitized resulting in less dopamine being produced. This is why drug addicts are on the hunt for the first rush they felt. Some drug addicts have abused the receptors responsible for feeling joy, euphoria etc. so much that they are incapable of naturally feeling love. Human brains are not wired to constantly feel pleasure. So no matter what happens in your life, you will adapt to it because, chemically, nothing will ever produce constant enjoyment. On the bright side, this also means that in a normal functioning human brain, constant sadness or dis-enjoyment is also out of the table. Things will get better, no matter how dark it seems now. Just as things will get worse, no matter how wonderful and euphoric you may feel at one point.*I guess I answered mostly the subtext to your question. So we desire that which we do not have, or cannot have, because it will likely make us happy immediately upon getting it. In other words, that which we desire, but we do not have, our receptors will most likely respond well too given that the receptors are not desensitized to it yet.

What does the saying "We don't rent pigs" mean?

It's from Lonesome Dove. By itself the saying doesn't mean anything. It was a metaphor in a sense; a way for Gus McCrae to get bothersome people out of his face. He figured if he put it right on the sign people wouldn't be coming up to him and bothering him about it.

Nobody really wanted to rent a pig, of course. It was just a bit of very, very dry humor.

What is it that we don't understand or know about black holes?

How the singularity looks like. When we see a picture of a black hole, it normally looks like this:The black hole is the black sphere. But actually that’s just the event horizon. A zone of space we can’t see because light is sucked inside, and can’t reach our eyes.Due to gravity and relativity, nothing can reach the escape velocity of a black hole at a distance equal to the event horizon, because it is higher than the speed of light. Therefore, we are unable to receive any information at all from inside, including the actual object that causes such gravitational field, the singularity.
