What Is Kiaser Permante

Kaiser Permanente?

Most people who use Kaiser have a love/hate relationship with them. I liked the low co-pays and low premiums, but I didn't really like the limited choices for doctors. I was also a bit off-put that they were taking a bunch of Medi-cal patients at the Kaiser facility I used. It looked like Grapes of Wrath in the waiting rooms. There were a bunch of kids with various bodily fluids flowing from their bodies and the parents were seemingly oblivious.

On the pediatric side, I really liked my daughter's physician. She really took an interest in her despite her screaming tantrums anytime she saw a white jacket. When we were in a position to get a PPO, we took it. More choices and the costs were comparable, at least in my situation.

You could do much worse than Kaiser. I'll leave it at that.

Why is Kaiser Permanente not still in Texas?

I don’t know anything really specific concerning the reasons KP left Texas in the 90’s. But, like any business, they will not stay in an area if they cannot make a profit (or break even, since Kaiser Foundation Health Plan is a non-profit entity). There are many reasons why KP has done so well in California but chief among them is that they own their own hospitals, labs, and pharmacies. They started small in the 1940’s and grew to the point that they were able to control costs by getting rid of the “middle man”, the private hospitals, labs, and pharmacies that all need to make their own profits. When they try to expand into a new area, they start by trying to work with the local hospitals to obtain rates that allow them to operate and still do OK financially. But, as time goes on, growth may not go as planned, outside costs may increase, there may be too much resistance from the private medical community, etc.

What is your review of Kaiser Permanente?

For basic stuff, they’re good. But for anything that is even remotely complicated, life threatening or chronic - basically anything that requires judgment beyond what they teach doctors in textbooks, Kaiser is pretty bad.I have NEVER had any critical or chronic conditions resolved at Kaiser. Never. The moment they encounter something that they know is hard to treat, they’ll start acting cold and impersonal and it is almost like they want to drive you away to a different healthcare provider who will deal with the difficult condition. They only have textbook remedies to offer. If you have a complicated condition that requires good judgment and maybe some extra thought on part of the doctor, you’ll most likely be very disappointed. The good part is that they’re super clean, you never ever have to give second thought to hygiene, I’ve never had issues with billing or insurance related matters (it’s always straightforward and transparent) and they have a good presence in the US. Most larger cities have multiple Kaiser healthcare hospitals. So you’re never too far from one.Scheduling appointments is way simpler than with many other healthcare providers. To sum it up, they’re great for simple health conditions. For complex stuff, you’re probably better off seeing a specialist outside of Kaiser.

Is kaiser permanente Medicaid?

Kaiser Permanente is not the same as Medicaid. Kaiser Permanente is a managed care consortium. Medicaid is a government program to provide health care to persons whose income is too low to afford private health care plans such as that provided by Kaiser Permanente.

Kaiser Permanente does not operate in Indiana.

You will have to either apply for Medicaid or buy health insurance from a provider that operates in Indiana such as Anthem. Can you get insurance via your employer or through the employer of your spouse?

Why is kaiser permanente so expensive?

As far as I know, Kaiser’s premiums are competitive with other health plans. Historically, they were usually lower, but I don’t know if that it is still true.If you are talking about the ACA market, I know that Kaiser definitely priced its plans higher than other insurance companies when the ACA kicked in. We were told that the people who did this analysis felt strongly that the premiums they were setting reflected the amount of services they expected people buying these plans would require. While Kaiser didn’t do so hot the first year of the ACA in terms of sign-ups, by the second and third year, other insurance companies in CA were either getting out of the ACA market, because they couldn’t see how to make it work, or they were jacking their premiums up to where Kaiser had been to start with.

Is Kaiser Permanente available in Texas?

I concur with Ms. Hoffman's answer--Kaiser Permanente has NO presence in Texas at present! (KP was once in parts of Texas over 25 years ago).A reason why they may left then, and have stayed out ever since, is the fact that the Lone State State's health care delivery and emergency room COSTS still remain among the nation's HIGHEST! Unlike most states where Kaiser operates, The Texas Legislature (BTW they meet in session this January 2019) still has yet to pass any statewide mandate to regulate these costs for consumers. Texas remains THE largest populated state long WITHOUT a statewide Healthcare Policy Exchange and website [When Obamacare passed, the McAllen area of Texas' Rio Grande Valley had, for an urban American area--according to both a Fed government and private industry issued reports--the HIGHEST priced Hospital Emergency Room Care, Private Doctor Visit and Average Prescription Costs in the entire USA!]
