....Huh. that's a good question. I found a little bit more about Edith Derby Williams by doing a Google search just for "Edith Williams", leaving out the "Derby" part -- that got me a few more hits (she apparently donated to John McCain's presidential campaign in 2000, and there's a feisty interview someone conducted with her about the current president in 2001), but there's no indication that she's died. This is a gut instinct on my part, but I'd bet that if she had actually died, you'd have been able to find SOMETHING somewhere. The one thing you may want to check is to see if your local library can help you do a search for Washington State newspapers to see if they have a recent obituary for her; if they don't, it's probably a safe enough bet that she's still alive. You could narrow it down even further and do a search in the databases for the Vashon Island local newspaper or for the nearest major paper in Seattle (I've put links below). They'd DEFINITELY have some coverage if she died, not becuase she was an historic figure, but because she also lived there. This was kind of fun. Thanks!
