In recent years, with most of my friends scattered out, or on significantly different work schedules than I am, it has become like “herding cats” to try to organize anything like a dinner.In the past few years, I have taken to just putting out the word that “I’m going to (a local steakhouse I like) for dinner on my birthday, and anyone that cares to join me is welcome to!”. This, so far, has been clear enough that I’m planning to pay for me, and anyone who knows me knows that if I was expecting to pay for them, I would have said so explicitly - so they are on their own too.I have yet to not have anyone show up for my “birthday dinner”… but, as my friends increasingly move away, I’m sure it’ll happen at some point. That’s OK. I’ll have a steak dinner by myself!

Either everyone pays for themselves or you don't have to pay and your friends cover the cost of your meal. It's very rare that the birthday person is expected to pay for everyone, unless it's a great big organised occasion with caterers and the like. If you were having a bbq at your place you could either supply everything or just put on salads and ask everyone to bring their own meat and booze.
