Why does anybody care about the royal wedding between Meghan Markle and Prince Harry?
Prince Harry is from an exceptionally prominent family, being the younger son of the Prince of Wales (the man who’ll become King when the present Queen dies), and has been in the public eye pretty much from birth until now, both for good (Invictus Games) and ill (being a ratbag in public). In many ways, the British royal family were the Kardashians before the Kardashians became the Kardashians, in that their private lives were fodder for the tabloids and gossip magazines - they still are, mind you. His wedding would be big news regardless of the identity of his wife-to-be.While I’ll be honest and say I’ve watched zero seconds of the show that Meghan Markle has apparently become famous as a result of starring in, I understand that she’s at least a minor celebrity herself as a result of that. Regardless, though, she’s marrying into the abovementioned prominent family, which makes her noteworthy (her soon-to-be sister-in-law Catherine seems like a pleasant enough person, but became very noteworthy by marrying Prince William).Add into that the fact that Meghan Markle is, as the American media seem obsessed about, “biracial”, which marks a level of what you might term “modernity” for the British royal family. Royal weddings in the past have tended to be about white people marrying white people, so this is a bit distinctive. You also have the assorted storms in teacups courtesy of the Markle family, who seem to have taken Warhol’s dictum of everyone being famous for 15 minutes slightly too literally.
