What Is Online High School Like

What is Online High School like?

I was wondering what is online high school like? Do you have to stare at a computer 8 hours a day? Can you work on your own pace? Do you have to have a good reason to go to school online? I dont get bullied or anything in school but i hate waking up early and teachers expecting me to do a whole bunch of BS busy work. I usually do work by myself because i dont like anyone at my school. Im going to be a Junior and my school starts in 3 week and i live in NC.

A normal high school vs. online high school?

I assume you're college bound, so I would think about how you would explain the change as a positive change to a college admissions officer. Is the online school over-the-top exceptional in some way that benefits you (besides having more time with your friends). I know online colleges assign homework. I'd be surprised if an honors quality online high school didn't. Check the online school's accreditations with the accrediting organization. Don't take the school's word for it. Another possibility would be stick with school but cut back the number of AP/honors classes if you're in more than one.

I am intrigued by the possibility of travel to Africa or South America. You don't mention why or for how long. If this travel would be more than a vacation, (for example, moving there for a year), you are right, public school would be impossible to keep up with. The regular teachers/classes probably won't be prepared for a long distance student. You'll probably need to do home schooling or maybe local schooling where you are if its available. Online school may not be on option either depending on where you are. Even if you take some time off from school while abroad, you will have some unique life experiences and accomplishments that will add to who you are as a person and that you should be able to use to your benefit during the college application process.

Someone who does high school online is missing three major aspects of high school.1. As someone who has tried taking courses oline, I can tell you that it's very difficult to motivate yourself every day to do the necessary coursework. The “annoying” rules and schedules of high school are generally what will force you to attend classes, even when you aren't in the mood.Obviously, this is a personal challenge, and if you are very self-motivated, this may not be an issue. I know several people who loved taking classes online.2. Nothing beats a real, live, old-fashioned, teacher. Someone who can guide you, answer your questions, and explain something in a different way when you don't understand.3. Social life. While it's certainly possible to have a great social life out of school, it's much easier to make friends and continue relationships with people who share your schedule and are around you every day.

I think people, particularly employers, tend to be very judgmental about online schools. Many people tend to stereotype these schools as not being very high quality and that only students with poor grades go to them. Also employers wonder if you've actually gotten any experience in your field especially if you're going into something like teaching or nursing because employers want you to have hands-on experience. I know a lot of these stereotypes are probably false, and it is definitely wrong to lump all online schools together as being sub-par, but you should be aware that these stereotypes exist. What I like most about online high school is that you can work ahead when you want, do work in your pj's, eat in "class", sleep in, do work when you want to, no homework. I've found that online school is a lot easier to learn. You mostly just do the state mandatory assignments for your subject. There are perks to going to regular schools: It can get lonely working on your computer all by yourself and you can network and form strong contacts that will come in handy when you need references. Then again, if a regular school just doesn't work with your lifestyle then maybe that's the choice for you. Either way, good luck!

Is online high school a good idea? And why?

Online High School is a great Idea. But, you have to be a very motivated student. Online High School is more work for the student. You can't just sit in lectures and regurgitate what the instructor gives you. You have to do the work yourself which includes doing the reading and tests. You also have to think because you can't just go on what everyone else in the class says. If you are up for the challenge of actually learning something then online school can be fun. You can move through classes faster and you don't have to sit through boring classes and wait for other students to catch up.

What is High School like?

It's better than middle school, there's less pettiness. People don't care what you wear and who you talk with- maybe 1 or 2 people might but nobody probably likes them anyways. It's a time to start experimenting for some, you will see facebook pictures of people drinking, possibly doing drugs. I know I felt like I was exposed to this whole other world. I was very innocent in middle school so hearing about people getting drunk or hooking up was new to me, but you get use to it. I'm not saying you should drink or do drugs but it exists within your school. Be careful if you decide to do those things, don't be an *** and bring alcohol or drugs to school- it's stupid and you're going to get caught.

Do you your best, I know I could've done better but I was overly concerned about boys and I had some personal things going on at the time. In 3 years, you will be applying to colleges (if you plan to go) and you really want to have great grades. It goes by so fast- everyone will tell you that. Try taking a few honors/AP classes. It's not a big deal if you're not the most studious student, try 1 or 2 in subjects you're best at. Also, if your school's policies are like mine, homework counts for a lot so do it!

This is sounding really cliche by now but don't be afraid to try new things. Join a club, try out for a sport, volunteer, whatever you want to do. You're young, you're supposed to be having the time of your life right now. You could meet amazing people. :)

Good luck, high school's nothing to be afraid of :)

In the Indian education system,under standard 1 - pre primary1 - 5 primary6 - 8 middle9 - 10 secretary11 - 12 higher secondaryhowever, I too agree with Kajal Sengupta that high school does not cannot anything

What is online school like?

Hi my names Emily too. and in freshman year too.haha well, first things first. since i'm home schooled for 5 years nearly, i know quite alot. I'll give you a list to answer your questions.
1. get to your classes online every morning.
2. yes you must do PE just like school. scan your paper and give it virtually. you can get more details when your in the class.
3. they don't require you to have a SUPER specific hour, but at least 6-8 hours at least. oh and also you have to fill in your attendance as well
4. Absolutely. you can get a good job, well, actually sometimes it depends on the college you go to. And I believe online diploma are offered. Some even went to Berkeley as college.
5. ABEKA, K12 ONLINE PUBLIC SCHOOL, CHARTER. (ETC)
6. of course you can go back. just don't enroll yourself in the school and ask the school teachers and principals to get you back in. Not a big deal at all.

SIDENOTE: I really recommend you go to K12 online public school. Its free of charge too. Your parent(s) are necessary to help you get you the things you need like the materials and all that. They need to HELP you fill in your attendance, not you. Everyday you go to your account and once you have signed in, your classes are in there and you can begin working on them. Every course has a teacher(s) to help you succeed! You parents need to get an account too. They don't really help you with the school work, but they may be needed to fulfill other things the teachers ask of them. Hope I summed it up for u! Let me know how it turns out!

Online High Schools, What have you tried and liked?

Hi! I am looking at online high schools and am wondering what people have tried and liked? I have looked and found some that look good.

Here are some that I am looking at:

Ashworth/James Madison: http://www.ashworthcollege.edu/programs/high-school/
Blueprint: http://www.blueprinteducation.org/
Penn Foster: http://www.pennfoster.edu/diploma/

What have you tried and recommend? It doesn't matter if it's not on the list, just if you've tried it and like it! Nothing crazy like $8,000 dollars or something! haha (:

I would only be taking freshman year online and the rest of high school would be a public school. (Don't ask me to explain why it's too complicated ahah)

I am pretty good at teaching myself and a good student, I think it would work well for me!

Thanks!

What is online school really like?

It really depends on who you sign up with. I've heard of some that are really lenient, and others that require you to be online from hours X to Y, no deviations. Some are easy to sign up with, while others do everything that they can to keep you out, including making enrollment into a lottery system where you can get in one year but not the next, and some grade levels aren't offered at all.

Maybe you'd like to try things that are even more interesting. Maybe Biology isn't reading Chapters 13 and 14, but rather helping the Biology professor at the local college by volunteering to watch the turtle eggs over the weekend. Or perhaps taking a kayak down your local rivers and streams and documenting the wildlife is more your speed. Or maybe your Biology final is helping to spearhead an effort to restore the wetlands area with your local Department of Conservation. Maybe it's the hours you logged with the vet at the clinic, or the volunteer hours you spent with the big animal vet at the Big Cat Rescue center.

Those sorts of activities are more along the lines of something called "unschooling." (See the writings of John Holt, or Google "unschooling" for more on that theory of education.) A good book to really make you think about your education is “The Teenage Liberation Handbook: How to Quit School and Get a Real Life and Education,” by Grace Llewellyn. Here’s an excerpt:

"Did your guidance counselor ever tell you to consider quitting school? That you have other choices, quite beyond lifelong hamburger flipping or inner-city crack dealing? That legally you can find a way out of school, that once you're out you'll learn and grow better, faster, and more naturally than you ever did in school, that there are zillions of alternatives, that you can quit school and still go to A Good College and even have a Real Life in the Suburbs if you so desire? Just in case your counselor never told you these things, I'm going to. That's what this book is for."

Even if you don’t hold with what the author has to say, the point of view she has is dramatically different and can be a great springboard to help you get in touch with what you believe school and learning should be like. The book also outlines a very nice reference for curriculum, as well as chapters about dealing with your school, convincing your parents, and getting a social life. It's meant to be a very usable book.
