well, if you are looking at the old book, ponyboy is the biggest head (main character), the smallest head is johny (innocent) and the other two can possibly be pony's two older brothers or one out of the two can be dally (playing a big roll)
but otherwise pny is telling the story, so he is the center of attention wiether or not he looks like his character.
