What Is The Best Dna Testing Product

What is the best DNA test?

You should look for an autosomal DNA test. It will tell you exactly what you're looking for. Other popular tests like Y chromosome DNA test will tell you only about your paternal line (info on your father, his father and so on).

There are a few companies around which offer autosomal DNA test at different price. Each of them should provide you the same results, so perhaps you should go with the cheapest offer.

Does DNA testing work?

The only way a DNA tests helps with a family tree is if you are male tracing your male line or a female with a male relative and are part of a "Y gene surname" project. I had a male cousin do a dna test to "prove" my mother's father (my grandfather's) surname was descended from a common ancestor who immigrated 1650 to America from England. Others of the same surname were tested and using those other DNA tests determined who's research and paper trail was correct. Mine was, but it did nothing with the various female family lines and "proof"
With the growing DNA database we who have already done a surname project have, those with that same surname today can have a DNA test and be linked to the same surname family line already established. But they will not have a "tree" of names, males and the females that bore them till they do the research and documentation to fill in the branches.
It has it's down sides too as a couple of brothers born 3 yrs apart (both in their 60's) did the test and it was discovered the younger brother had a different Y chromosome than his older brother. So had a different father and their mother completely denied it (she was in her 80's).
Another male family line of mine will not match his "birth" surname because he was born to an unwed daughter and the parents raised them as their son and the mother was is "sister". This is more common before hospital births became more normal than home births and the births being registered by family at the county court house.
In my opinion, unless you have your family tree in hand and are only looking at your male (Y gene) family lines and join that surname DNA project to have tests to compare too and match that tree to other trees, DNA testing is not helpful at all.

What is the best ancestry DNA test?

The best one is the one where other members of your extended family have already taken the test. And, you don't use blood, you use saliva. This is why a Surname DNA Project can provide you with the most accurate information, plus it is often lower in cost.

First, companies greatly exaggerate the amount of information you will receive. DNA testing has its place but it will only show you very limited ancestry.

There are basically three kinds of Genealogy DNA tests:
Y-DNA - can only be taken by a male and only shows the father line. Your father, his father, his father and so on. No wives at all. That means out of 8 great grandparents, you get information on only one.
MT-DNA - can be taken by either men or women, but only shows the mother line. Your mother, her mother, her mother and so on. Plus the mutation is so gradual that it only shows very deep ancestry, thousands of years ago.
Autosomal DNA can be taken by ether sex and potentially shows all ancestors for 4 or 5 generations, but only useful if distant cousins have also been tested.

DNA testing is much more effective for proving or disproving information you already have. Work on you own family history first, then use DNA testing if you find a specific need.

Most people would say 23andme if you want health as well as ancestry. Personally, I think the health data is not as valuable. The good thing is that you can download your raw DNA data once it is tested and take it pretty much anywhere for additional readings. Genetic health testing still has a long way to go to being perfect. The health research side of DNA can give you information about increased and lowered risk of diseases. One of the ways they get to these conclusions is by studying populations who have the condition they are studying and see what genes they share separate from a control group of the same population. Unless your genetics share a proportion of DNA with a population already studied for that condition, then the higher or lower risk may not be accurate for you. Personally, I think that ancestry.com is the easiest website to put together a family tree on. When you do that it can connect your DNA with others who have done it too and tell you how you might be related. Then, if their profile is open, you can view their family tree as well and gain more information from their research. There are other websites and even smartphone apps now that you can upload your DNA data to check results. I've used ancestry.com, DNA.land, promeathease, genomapp, and have spent around 220 in all for my research including the DNA testing kits and subscriptions.Hope this helps.

Well….it’s hard to say since tribes within the United States don’t give their DNA to these companies like 23andme since it’s considered racist due to the past government taking tribes dna ….the only way to figure out what tribe you’re from are paper trails….you’ll get a percentage of American Indian on a heritage test but it won’t tell you which tribe you’re from and is most likely from tribes in central and South america So you could be in a Cherokee tribe and your heritage results won’t show any Native American..so basically if any site tries to sell you a heritage test saying they can prove what tribe you’re from they’re lying …there are none. Hope this helps or answers some of what you’re asking for

What are some of the best ancestral DNA testing companies?

Go to www.familytreedna.com. They are the oldest, have the largest data bases, and do the DNA testing for the National Geographics Genotype Program.

Whether your ancestors were adopted, Jews, of African derivation, Chinese, whatever, Family Tree can definitely help.

My own test revealed ancestors from the Canary Islands, Saami, Basques, Inuits, Eskimos, American Indians, all over Europe and the Middle East, more than 30 countries in Africa, China, Japan, Viet Nam, the Philippines and so many more. Via paper trail, I have found American Indians, all of Europe and the Middle East, and Libya.

I also found that I have ancestors from Sicily, that had migrated there from the Baltic States centuries before.

So, give Family Tree a try.
