What Is The Best Flea Treatment For Dogs

What is the best flea treatment for dogs?

Everybody will have an answer as to what they like, but that may not be best for your area of the country. Topicals have been out so long now that the fleas are becoming immune to them. Frontline works for me now, but I've only been using it a couple of years. I used Bio Spot for 15 yrs and never had a problem. I loved it. Then all of the sudden it didn't work anymore. I changed to Frontline because it was make with a different chemical. So the fleas here were not immune to it yet. You need to ask people in your area what is working for them.

I never heard of the one you used. I discovered Comfortis a few years ago. That stuff is AWESOME! It's a flavored chewable pill. It kills the fleas that are on them within 30 minutes and continues to repel them for a month. If the flea season is real bad I treat them every 3 weeks, instead of 4. Great stuff!

Best Flea treatment for Dogs?

Advantix kills fleas, eggs and larvae, also prevents ticks and repels mosquitos - best there is as far as I'm concerned --- all my dogs are on it every single month and never have fleas or ticks.
We are in the rural south where fleas and ticks are always around - and they still never have any, Advantix is that good.

Some people prefer Frontline Plus, which keeps fleas and ticks off but does not repel mosquitos.

Switch to Advantix from Advantage - but Advantage should certainly prevent fleas, their eggs and larvae - are you using it every single month?? I doubt you are seeing flea eggs --- they are not visible to the naked eye normally, you may be seeing adult flea droppings - not the same as eggs, but your dog shouldn't have fleas if on monthly Advantage.

If your dogs are truly infested, go to the vet and get a pill - Capstar - that kills flea with the hour - but you still need to wash all bedding, vacuum your rugs and sofas - then throw out the bag - and bomb your house if you have infestation already.

What are the best non-prescription flea treatment for dogs?

Typically, I'd recommend Frontline. It is a proven, non-prescription flea treatment. I once used a Hartz brand treatment and read online later that night about all the horrible things it caused, including death. Panic would be putting it lightly. Since then, I'm really not to excited to put any chemicals on my dog if I don't have to. Currently, I only use Frontline when we are planning a hike or outdoor adventure specifically to protect against ticks. For fleas, I've turned to something else. Something much safer AND cheaper. To rid your dog of pests both inside and out, I recommend FOOD GRADE diatomaceous earth. You can buy pounds of it for a few dollars and it goes a long way. DE looks like flour, but its pulverized seashells that use their teenie tiny sharp edges to rough up insects as they pass over it and they basically dehydrate and die. Rough on insects, super safe for your dog. It can be applied to their skin/coat liberally. Leave it for a few days and then give them a good bath. DE can dry out their skin, so be sure not to leave it on indefinitely, perhaps use a coat conditioner as well. You should also dust their beds and favorite places to lay. You can even treat your yard or yourself. Lots of applications. For internal uses, like worms or parasites, you can give them a little with their food. Be sure to check the amount appropriate for your size dog. I think 1 teaspoon/day for under 55 lbs and 1 tablespoon/day for 55+.We recently had a flea problem with our dog and I didn't want to coat her with chemicals, so we did this. It took a little time, and two applications to her and the house, but she is good now.

Best flea treatment for a Shih Tzu or small dog in general?

Advantage, frontline, revolution, and Comfortis work. The last is only available from your vet, as it is an oral pill. All of these can take 4 hours to kill fleas on your pet, and if you have a lot of fleas in your house ( one flea lays 100 eggs per day, and they will NOT jump on you if the dog comes into the house) it will look like the medicine isn't working because new fleas will constantly be jumping on your dog. Treat the house too, by vaccuuming everywhere, steam cleaning the carpets, washing your bedding and his bedding, and using a good quality spray all over the floors and carpets. You have to treat both the house and the dog and any other cats and dogs in the house to get rid of fleas. Good luck!
