What Collar and Leash Is Best?

What's the best collar and leash type for a new puppy? Were picking our puppy up on Friday, but we aren't sure what's better. A harness, gentle lead, nylon collar, etc.. We don't want to get a prong collar or choke chain since she's so small. Nukka is a Great Dane, Akita, Bullmastiff mix so she's going to grow fast. So we want something that isn't very expensive and replacable for while she is growing.

Also, what's the best way to leash train her? And teach her how to heel? Is it okay for us to take her out on short walks in front of our apartment when she only has her first round of shots?

Which is the best collar for a 4 month old rottweiler puppy for leash walking training as hes on harness collar roght now and has pulling issues?

I’m not sure what a harness collar is, but I would recommend a no-pull harness as you work on teaching him to walk with you. In my experience, the Sense-ation harness tends to fit larger dogs the best:The leash clipped at his chest prevents him from using the full force of his body weight for pulling. Use this while you work on training him to not pull on the leash.Side note: I never recommend correction collars for puppies as you first have to teach them what they need TO be doing before you can correct them for doing it wrong.Training a puppy not to pull…Go into a small-ish room with your puppy that is also big enough to walk around in. During mealtimes, use your dog’s kibble/food to get your puppy to follow you around the room. Give him a piece of the food every few steps. This will teach him how to walk with you, even without a leash. Then do the same thing on walks with your dog on a leash, but use more exciting food like boiled chicken breast. It’s helpful to only give him this on walks so he really learns to pay attention to you outside instead of pulling ahead. Two things to think about…Your dog pulls because he goes faster than you (not because he wants to dominate you). The more he learns that pulling forward gets him to go forward, the more he will do it.

What is the best leash for a large dog that likes to pull?

Seconding Karen's answer, I'm not sure whether Annie had a bad experience with the Gentle Leader that applies pressure to the muzzle and neck, but as a veterinary technician who got involved in lots of dog rescues and trained many difficult, abused, or otherwise challenging pets, I found it to be an outstanding tool.I reviewed it in depth here on Quora, and gave it 5 stars. I've never seen any ill effects, and my own dogs —one of whom was a several traumatized rescue from New Orleans' Bayou St. John— benefited from it greatly.Since large dogs can pull regular people to the ground, causing injury and getting out of their control, sometimes with very bad consequences, I recommend the Gentle Leader to everyone I know; it can make the most massive dog walkable by smaller or more fragile folks. It does so by applying pressure to two places —on the snout and on the back of the neck— that dogs have instinctual responses to: mothers and pack leaders also gently bite those areas in order to communicate control and direction. It's always seemed very effective to me, and the veterinarians I knew and worked with recommended it, too. Good luck!

What would be the best collar and leash to get for a Golden retriever?

Harness Or Collar for Bichon Puppy?

Harnesses, used with clicker training, can work wonders. Collars can cause collapsed tracheas, especially in small dogs.

Choke collars on dogs make about as much sense as choke collars on children. Pain and fear are not good training methods for dogs and choke collars provide both.

Once you find a good fitting harness for your pup, let her wear it around so she can get used to having it on. Then you can attach the leash and start training with her. It's a good idea to hire a trainer for one-on-one early puppy training, if you can afford it--especially if this is your first puppy.

Good luck to you and your puppy!

When is the right age to introduce a collar and a leash to a puppy? When can you start taking a puppy out for walks? I have a 10-week-old Labrador. Do I start now?You can put a collar and leash on your puppy as soon as you get your puppy, and you can take him or her for walks now too. This should go without saying that the walk you take a young puppy on is not the walk you take an adult dog on. A young puppy can be safely walked around the yard for the mental stimulation. You can also take your puppy out to places that allow dogs, such as pet stores, where she or he will be sure to get lots of attention and socialization. Just be careful around other dogs and selective about who you let your puppy meet. Your puppy should have had at least one set of shots before you do this.Puppy socialization classes are also good places to take your puppy, provided they are run by someone knowledgeable about puppies and the class isn’t too overcrowded. Puppies need to socialize with other puppies and dogs as well as people during this sensitive period which ends around 12 or so weeks.Puppies don’t need regular walks, Make socialization your priority. This can consist of a very short walk in the neighborhood, around your yard, or to pet-friendly businesses. Invite friends over to meet your new puppy, and have them give your puppy treats. If possible, ask them to leave their shoes at the door.

To help you make the best decision for your pet, we highlight some of the most common types of dog collars below. If you are not sure which model is right for you, speak to a veterinarian or a dog trainer, who can make a recommendation based on your individual dog.Types of Collars that May be Useful for dog breedsChoke-chain collar: According to the AKC’s New Puppy Handbook, some trainers suggest a "choke chain" collar for training, but you must know the proper way to use one for it to be safe. When used under the guidance of a reputable dog trainer some breeds respond very well to a chain-link training collar, but others, especially short-nosed dogs, should never wear a choke chain. The options listed above, especially the head halter, is a safer, more effective way to prevent pulling on a walk.Prong/pinch collar: The American Kennel Club recognizes that special training collars may be an effective and useful management device, when properly used, for controlling dogs that might be extremely active, difficult to control on a neck collar, or dog aggressive. These collars are also recognized as possibly useful for gaining control at the start of basic obedience training, essential education that dogs deserve and need.Types of Leashes for puppiesStandard leash: Straight leashes are available in a variety of fabrics (including nylon and leather), widths, and lengths, and most feature a loop at the end for easy gripping. Some also feature reflective fabric for evening walks. Selecting which variety is right for you is mostly based on preference and budget, but it may be necessary to consider the size of your dog and the weight of the leash.Retractable leash: These leashes usually feature a thick plastic grip out of a which a thin nylon cord comes out when pulled and retracted when the pressure is released, similar to a measuring tape. These leashes can work against you when teaching loose-leash walking and are not permitted during Canine Good Citizen tests. For best results, we recommend a standard leash for pet dogs. For more information visit at dog guide reviews
