Especially when it comes to something as relatively non-technical as character animation, which software a school uses shouldn’t be in your top ten list of concerns. If you can animate well in Maya, you’ll be able to animate well in Blender after maybe a week of getting used to the differences (though there will be tools you miss; character animation is not Blender’s strong point).And if you’re concerned about the cost; Maya is free to students.
Which school is the best for 3D modeling, animation, and motion design?
There many great resources, but there are also two “Harvards” for 3D Modeling, animation and motion design. If you go through either of these schools, your education and contacts are like you joined a “gender neutral old boys network” due to the comprehensive educations, as well as the contacts and friendships developed because so many of these schools graduates go on to become major players in the entertainment production industry. The schools are Sheridan (Computer Animation | Sheridan) and Ringling (Computer Animation). I went to neither, doing the geek developer path, but over the years I’ve worked with many Sheridan and Ringling graduates. They stand out because they have the foundations, the history, and understanding of their medium in a comprehensive way that a good college should teach a individual. Plus they are great artists. These days many schools are producing great digital technical artists, but I’d still say Sheridan and Ringling produce the best.
