What two NYC subway stations are closest to each other?

If you're talking about stations on the same line, these are pretty close to each other:14th and 18th on the 13rd Avenue and Union Square on the LFulton St and Wall St on the 2,3For subway stations that are physically closest while not being a transfer:Bleecker Street (6) and Broadway Lafayette (B,D,F,M) were built close to each other and not intended as a transfer point, but subsequently connected in one direction only (to/from the downtown 6).  Update: There are now transfers in both directions, so these can't really be considered separate stations anymore.

You can definitely find some cheap places to stay in Jersey and commute to NYC. As mentioned in other answers, staying around PATH stations is highly recommended (within 5 mins walking distance). While these might not be the cheapest options (in NJ) locations on the Hudson River waterfront (Hoboken, Newport & Exchange Place) are the closest, safest and easiest to get to from NYC.Here's why :~The 24/7 PATH train service will get you to downtown(WTC) and midtown(33rd street) in 5 to 15 mins http://www.panynj.gov/path/maps-...~A PATH ride will cost you only $2.75~So if you're near the station, door to door, it would roughly be 10 mins to WTC, 10 mins to Greenwich Village, 20 mins to Herald Square, 30 mins to Times Square, 40 mins to Central Park, 20 mins to the statue of liberty NJ ferry station ~Both the WTC and 33rd street stations are transportation hubs with several NY subway lines that can take you to all parts of the city in mins~Picture perfect Hudson River and Manhattan skyline views since it's at the waterfront ~Some of the safest neighborhoods in the Greater NY city area ~Lots of options to eat and shop nearby~Easily accessible from the airports via uber pool as well as public transportationSome of the hotels in the area are Courtyard, The Westin and Double Tree by Hilton, you'll also find some amazing airbnb options in the luxury high rise waterfront apartments for half the price.  There's not much free parking in the area, if you're driving down, but there are garages where you can park for 10 to 20$ a day which is much cheaper than NYC.If you're looking for even cheaper options, consider Grove Street or Journal Square(check reviews for the safe areas). Not as convenient, but ok.Enjoy your trip to the Big Apple!!!

Does anyone commute to New York City from Mount Olive New Jersey - if so what is the best commute options.?

New Jersey Transit has a small rail station in Mount Olive, which runs off both the "Morris and Essex Line" as well as the "Montclair-Boonton Line". It's the next-to-last stop, before the western terminus at Hackettstown.

Both lines have midtown direct service into midtown Manhattan (no transfers...extremely easy). Both also have direct trains to Hoboken. From there, you can transfer to a PATH train into lower Manhattan (financial district). Not sure what part of NYC you want to get to.

NJ Transit has over a dozen trains into and out of NYC every day on those lines, most during rush hour. Commuting should be extremely simple.

If you accidentally get on a midtown train, and you need to get to lower manhattan, you can always take the subway down to the financial district. see the MTA website below for maps.

What is the average cost of an Amtrak trip from Boston to New York?

Edited (08/15/12) to add:The article at http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/1... says that Acela fares between New York and Washington range from an average of $145 for regular business class to $351 for first class; New York to Boston, $104 to $251; and Boston to Washington, $163 to $393.Non-Acela train fares between New York and Washington average $49 to $153 for coach and $120 to $193 for business class; New York to Boston, $49 to $133 for coach and $104 to $168 for business; and Boston to Washington, $70 to $185 coach and $144 to $233 for business class.----Amtrak prices fares in "buckets," meaning that the first N tickets are the lowest possible fare, then the next one, and so on.  Therefore, if you book early enough, the fare will be the lowest fare for your route. For BOS-NYP on the Northeast Regional, that lowest fare is $49 if you book at least two weeks in advance, $69 otherwise.  The next bucket is $98, and so on.  In general, if you book even a day or two in advance for a not-very-popular time on the Northeast Regional, you can get one of the lowest fares.  For Friday nights, weekends, Monday mornings, or holidays, the prices jump up sharply. For Acela trains, the lowest fare is $101.  The next buckets on Acela are $118, $134, and $151.  From my experience, booking a few weeks early will almost guarantee the lowest fare, and booking a few days or a week early might land you in the second or third fare bucket.(all prices current as of January 2012)----Regarding actual averages: Amtrak releases some monthly data on their website (see Monthly Performance Reports at http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/Co...).  There probably is better data out there, but my cursory google search was unsuccessful. For example, the October 2011 report indicates that ridership on the Acela was approximately 300,418, with ticket revenue at $45,840,158, meaning an average ticket price of about $152.  This is for the entire route, however.  Assuming that most of the tickets are BOS-NYP or NYP-WAS or the reverse routes, and they each cost about the same, this would give an approximate average of $152 for the Acela BOS-NYP route during October 2011, for example.
