What Is The Cultural Value Of The Taj Mahal

Well, if you ask me, I'd most definitely say that Taj Mahal very much represents India and as much as any other monument built earlier or later. There are quite a lot of people who think Taj Mahal is not our culture and doesn't represent India. This comes from their hatred towards other religions (especially Islam). This leads them to believe that the monuments built by the Mughals somehow don't represent India and are to be demolished. They don't see what actually Taj Mahal stands for. These people view Taj Mahal as a black spot on Indian history rather than the symbol of love.Just as an example you can see one response the link got:https://www.quora.com/link/Why-e...I have read an answer or two in the related questions section where the author says that a country with over 5000 years of history should not come down to monuments built in the last millennia. Which leads me to think that some might believe Taj Mahal somehow reduces the value of other monuments.I don't know how many might hold the above idea, but Taj Mahal getting a lot of attention and it being one of the world wonders does not reduce the value of any other monument built before or after Taj Mahal in any way.

It is not just Indians. You think a lot of everyday Russians care about the nitty gritty of the Tsarist empire? Or Serbians who care to delve into their Balkan heritage? Or for that matter, French who actually care about their Gallic legacy? People have a life to live - not everyone has the time or inclination to delve over things that have very little relevance in our day-to-day lives (and things that happened hundreds of years ago). When it comes to the life of the average middle class Indian, the legacy of the Taj Mahal (beyond its superficial trivia) is of very little relevance. In fact - for those of us who have absolutely no cultural affinity with the Mughals - the Taj Mahal is just a huge, white and ancient marble building - not "our culture".Also, for a lot of us - travelling is all about meeting new and interesting people, not obsessing over historical/cultural monuments. Your best insight into any culture is not appreciation of historical artefacts that no one really lives by - but observing and interacting with the people you come across. Most important of all - what really is 'Indian culture? Is it Assamese culture? Khasi culture? Marathi culture? Punjabi culture? India is a multi-cultural societies - the cultures are so diverse that some of the practices in some cultures are diametrically opposed to others. For instance, divorce is a gigantic taboo in the Tamil or Haryanvi cultures, whereas some tribal cultures never institutionalised the concept of marriage. The concept of "Indian culture" is an abstract myth created by the unimaginative minds of certain chauvinists. They are like frogs in a well - they think their 'culture' is what the rest of India is like.It is time for Indian cultural chauvinists to think about what we can do *today* to make the country a better place to live in - not thump their chests about what it might have been hundreds or thousands of years ago.
