What Is The Cure For Cancer

Cure for cancer?

I followed your link to your other question; I'm going to suspend disbelief and answer this question seriously.

You have had some answers from people claiming they know a cure, and will probably get more, but the facts are these:

Cancer is hundreds of diseases, not just one. The difficulty is that different cancers are caused by different things, so no one strategy can prevent them, and different cancers respond to different treatments so no one treatment can cure them all

Quite a few cancers can be cured these days though. Cancer Research UK says that 7 out of 10 children are cured of cancer. Testicular cancer, Hodgkin's disease, and many cases of leukaemia can all be cured in adults with chemotherapy, most skin cancers are cured with surgery, and many cases of thyroid cancer and cancer of the larynx are cured with radiotherapy.

Many other types of cancer are also cured if they are found early enough - 75% of breast cancers found at stage one for example. There is still a long way to go, especially with some of the commonest types of cancer such as lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancer.

There is much research going on in all types of cancer to try and find a cure. Biological therapies such as cancer vaccines, monoclonal antibodies and gene therapies are all active areas of research. There is also research into how cancers grow their own blood supplies. Researchers are beginning to test 'anti-angiogenic' drugs that may be able to stop that happening and so stop cancers from growing. Of course you still have to find them early enough for this to be a cure. But there is hope that this treatment may also stop cancer secondaries from developing.

Many people – invariably those who have not had cancer or been close to it - have pet theories about what causes and prevents it, and how to treat it. Existing treatments - chemotherapy and radiotherapy - are not perfect, far from it, but we know, because they have been clinically tested and proven, that they save some lives and extend many others.

They found a cure for cancer in the 1950s?

But kept it secret in order to control population (and because "cancer treatment" is such a big business)?

Any truth to this? It sounds plausible to me...

What is the cure for blood cancer?

Yes and No. Cure in Oncology has been traditionally known as 5 year survival and by that definition many are cured. Today however we see recurrences after 5, 10, 15 years and therefore definition of cure is life long remission! In some cancers life long remission is seen and they die of other causes.Blood cancer cancer known as Leukemia is divided into Acute and Chronic.Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia- seen mostly in children and curable in 80%. Today the mutations and translocations help us understand the leukemia better and chance of cure.Acute Myeloid Leukemia- seen mostly in elderly (average age at diagnosis is 67) and difficult to cure. Having said that, there are eight types of AML (M0 to M7) and cure rates vary for each subtype. They are further distinguished by the mutations they carry. Leukemia - Acute Myeloid - AML: SubtypesChronic Myeloid Leukemia- This is a poster boy for targeted therapy. CML is defined by BCR/ABL translocation which is a chromosomal abnormality. Imatinib is the drug targeting this mutation. Patients who started Imatinib in 2001 are still doing fine. But at same time many have developed resistance and have received second or third line drugs which have failed eventually. There are few studies and follow up of patients where we know that CML has been cured for life. In coming years as we understand the science better we will be better able to define the cure for CML patients.Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia- CLL is a tricky disease. In this one after diagnosis in early stages can live for 10 years plus without treatment. Sounds unbelievable isn’t it? But, yes based on staging, molecular analysis, signs and symptoms, CLL patients can avoid treatment for a long period of time. Again CLL is seen in elderly and difficult to cure.As mentioned by Dr Nageswara Rao, Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) is one of the curative options for select patients. But some times cure can elude even after BMT.So to answer your question, yes, blood cancer patients can expect cure based on type and stage, but they need to remember they can die of other causes! In fact as of today, we all will die of one day or the other ! Scientific advances may make the previous statement redundant in ………years! :)

How long until I am cure from cancer?

I have two large bumps on my breast and one large bump on my right thigh and everybody I ask always tell me that it's cancer and I should see a doctor. However, I found a more efficient method. Every morning and evening, I lie in my ring of crystals and tea-lights and play meditation music in the background. Do you know how long is it until my cancer is cured?

Will we ever cure AIDS and cancer?

At the present time, there is no cure for AIDS. Treatment stresses aggressive combination drug therapy when possible. The use of multi-drug therapies has significantly reduced the number of U.S. deaths resulting from AIDS. The potential exists to possibly prolong life indefinitely using these and other drug therapies to boost the immune system, keep the virus from replicating, and ward off opportunistic infections and malignancies. Prognosis after the latency period depends on the patient’s specific symptoms and the organ systems affected by the disease. Patients with AIDS-related lymphomas of the central nervous system die within two to three months of diagnosis; those with systemic lymphomas may survive for eight to ten months. In America, the successful treatment of AIDS patients with HAART has actually led to a growing number of people living with HIV. About 25,000 infected people per year are added to the list of HIV-infected Americans. As of 2000, there is no vaccine effective against AIDS. Several vaccines to prevent initial HIV infection and disease progression are being tested. In 2002, reports showed a new “library” vaccine showed potential. The vaccine is composed of up to 32 HIV gene fragments that can induce a number of immune responses. In the same year, the British government worked with five African countries in a trial to find an effective gel that would protect women against HIV during sex.

What if someone finds cure for cancer ?

He/she would become stinking rich. We know this because there are people who make a living out of selling false hopes to sick people. See for instance http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/2012/0...

On the internet there are many claims of miraculous "natural" cancer cures that are being suppressed. Here some of them are listed, with links to sites explaining what is wrong with them: http://anaximperator.wordpress.com/2011/...

Cancer is a collective term for approximately 200 different diseases. Every cell type in your body can (in principle) develop into its own type of cancer. On top of that individual cancer cells in every cancer are also different from one another. On top of that, the cancer cells interact in very complex ways with the surrounding normal cells. So it is not all that surprising that we don't have, and most likely won’t find a single cure for all cancers.

That being said, many cancers are cured on a daily basis. Most of them through surgery, but some of them are treated with additional radio-/chemotherapy. And some cancers are cured by chemotherapy alone. Overall cure rate is approximately 60%, so it is more likely that someone diagnosed with cancer will be cured than not. And outlooks are still improving - all thanks to scientific research.

Do you think they will ever find a cure for cancer?

If you look at childhood cancers only cure rate is close to 80%: http://www.cancerresearchuk.org/cancer-i...

There are many factors contributing to this improvement. Surgical techniques have been improved, and surgery is still the most important treatment of most cancers.

Radiological examination has undergone tremendous improvement over the years. This helps greatly in deciding the appropriate treatment of individual cancers.

Pathology has become highly advanced, ensuring a good basis for treatment planning.

Chemotherapy now comprises more than 100 different therapies.

Biological treatment makes it possible to attack vital functions in cancer cells.

All this will continue to improve, but there will never be a single easy-to-do treatment of all cancers.

EDIT TO ADD:
[I know someone the had melanoma. He didn't get any treatments, he used a natural cure and he was cancer free in 17 weeks. ]

A melanoma is usually diagnosed by removing it and submitting it for examination by a pathologist. So he was actually cancer free in 17 minutes. Of course quacks will say this is BS because if nobody believed them, they would make no money off of cancer.
