What Is The Deal With Spirit Animals

How do you find out what your spirit animal is?

I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really REALLY cannot STAND the mentalities that run behind these stereotypes. It is SO difficult to recognize that not everybody is smart enough to realize that this whole mythical aura that surrounds the very little the average american knows about Natives is completely BOGUS and was created by hollywood to sell movies. It doesn't help that new-age freaks, mistaken for the "real thing" (which I am, reside on the Rez and all) who are probably chemically imbalanced in addition to several other social and mental disorders, add to the problem by parading around like the bunch of crazy idiots they are, calling themselves windfire, spiriteagle, roaring thunder, etc while claiming to have a nameless great great great Chippewa or cherokee or blackfoot grandmother who's family hid the truth of her indianess until this generation.

Nope. No spirit animals. And the purpose certain animals serve in our stories are about as significant "spiritually" to us as the Dove who carried the olive branch in the Bible is to Christians. At least my tribe, and most of the other tribes I know of anyways.

Edit: Foedadea/Boo, I have tried to be patient and understanding in the past. I give up and get discouraged every single day when people confront me with this kind of stuff...I have to deal with it often, no joke or exaggeration...people come to the reservation with cameras as if they are going to a zoo and treat the people LIVING here like staff at an exhibit...it just gets exhausting. Especially because they have been "driving through the reservation for a half an hour and can't find any" (seriously, this kind of stuff happens often) or they walk into the museum and get upset that there arent teepees and human remains out on display (or voice recordings of chief Seattle's famous speech, lol) then go on to pick apart the aspects of your being that appear to be "genuinely indian" such as your cheekbones or eyes. (I kid you not)...and then start talking about their cherokee grandma, and the connection they have always felt to mother earth, or the spirit of some chief that came to them in a vision...it just gets old

I think if I had a spirit animal it would be a barracuda

What is the deal with spirit animals?

as certain cultures & religions tromped their way across the globe they destroyed others. Bits & pieced of many ancient European traditions can be pieced together & some of the northern, Nordic ones you can find some things intact.

Add in the whole melting pot thing peeps went through when they hit the Americas, a lot of what was left was stripped.

Now you have a generation flailing around in the dark.....as many reject the bible & those myths & legends.......so what do they have left? They latch on to other things.....Buddhism, Tai Chi, Yoga.....all to fill the void.....and somebody somewhere vaguely remembered a cowboy in a movie getting "spiritual guidance" from a Hollywood Indian & rolled it into the basis of this new age stuff.

To give it the same kind of credibility as other....um what's the word I'm looking for....."surrogate spiritualties" they attributed it to natives - wrongly assuming there was not only *some* basis in reality but also believing nobody could check it out or call them on it.

As far as wolves? PR, spin.....'Muricans love their dogs.....the lone wolf image, the concept of the pack being a loving family.....fills so many voids.....don't forget the birds of prey too....

Basically I think if they'd name a muscle car after it the spirit animal crowd would eat it up.....

Who is your hip-hop spirit animal?

Wow what an interesting question! For me it would have to be a couple people.Amine.He is such a talented and underated artist. His flow is so unique and bouncy and his words will go straight to your heart if you listen to them. He doesnt care about what wave others are on hes too busy building his own.He taught me to be original. Stay true to the flow inside you for it is your true self representation. Take what you already have and experiment and find a sound no one else has done before.EminemHis idgaf attitude mixed with his incredible lyrics are enough to make anyone appreciate rap. He can tell a story so vividly you cant believe hes rapping and if you mess with his daughter you might as well be commiting career suicide. This is the don't mess with my family mentality I have as well as the darkness that is somtimes inside me. I also take pride in creating something you can see with your mind.Chance the rapper.Acid rap will forever be my favorite mixtape. The quality this dude can make with no help is absolutely insane. Hes the reason I started rapping. I love everything about him. Hes always giving back to his community. His music is free. His bars are so clean.“Move to the neighborhood; bet they dont stay for good watch.Somebody'll steal daddys rollie, call it the neighborhood watch”He showed me anyone from anywhere can make beautiful music. You dont need a deal or a label behind you. Just the sheer willpower to be great. He also taught me to be humble above all.

Do you believe in spirit animals? How have they helped you?

I believe in guardians and allies who may take on the form of various animals, and may settle on one favorite that suits them. Some anthropologists trying to fit the ideas from some cultures into a definition that would fit the mindset of westerners called them “spirit animals”.Unless one has undergone the passages required to perceive them, it is doubtful that they have found their “spirit animal”. Generally, these passages require a trained guide from a tradition in which one is taught to do this safely without going insane or catching some bad spirit.I am sure that some people have met some animal spirits or spirits or extradimensional beings who took the shape of animals. I don’t knock their experiences or beliefs…but just like someone who learns to read Opele from a book, this is still not a babalawo unless they have been through the passages in the community.Same goes for other tribal practices and titles that come from other communities. It is bad to run around claiming a passage one hasn’t crossed over.I wear many marks. I will be getting another soon from my community here in Israel. It was not earned easily. It did not come without a great loss. These things are not done for the self. The benefits are not to serve one’s self. It is not for personal fulfillment or self help that one seeks their primal guardians or embodies them. One does it for their people.

How do I discover my spirit animal?

This is an entire blog post :http://www.fireitupwithcj.com/a-... Here's a summary: Indigenous cultures would find their spirit animal by going on a journey. There are three worlds in which you can travel to in a journey (upperworld, middle world, and lower world).  To find a spirit animal, you will have most success by travelling to the lower world. Here are steps:1) Before you journey figure out the best way to get to lower world. Generally, it's by entering into a hole (tree, water, streams, waterfall) in the ground or something that takes you to the lower world. See. Call of the Sacred Drum Volume 1 2) Get in to a theta state.  Lots of shamanic drumming YouTubes that will get you in this state. 3) Imagine going into this hole in the ground and go deeper and deeper until you land some place.  As you emerge, you will be greeted by someone4) State your request. I'd like to find my spirit animal.  Ask, it the animal that greets you is your spirit animal.  Some believe that you will see 3 representations of that animal (side view, front view, etc).  This is validation that this is your spirit animal. Ask if this is your spirit animal and bring it back with you. You can do as Lisa mentions and ask it a question too. If your animal has sharp teeth, claws, turn back and don't take the animal with you. Start over again. 5) Go back the way you came into the location. Good book is Michael Harner's book: The Way of the Shaman  or try Sandra Ingerman. Happy Journey!!!

What do you think of people who say they have a spirit animal?

It may depend on the nature of the person and what they mean by the phrase. On the one hand its fine to see the spiritual in everything and it has a symbolic dimension that relates to something archetypal. Notice that ancient astrology has signs of the zodiac associated with animals and these are not literally “spirit animals” but symbolic representations that suggests personality characteristics with which a given sign of the zodiac is represented. On the other hand this way of thinking and identification can be rather, atavistic, and perhaps a kind of conceptual glamour in the sense of illusion. It is illusion if the ego, in attempting to set is self apart, adopts the idea for its odd attention getting value and when the thought-form of the animal obscures its symbolic meaning.Spirit is, by definition transcendent and formless. As such it poorly conceptualized by the use of animal based associations. Consider that the concept of “animal man” is associated with a primitive state of consciousness that is remote from the spiritual. The word “animalistic” has very unsavory and primitive associations, including:“ Indifference to all but the physical appetites.”“The philosophical doctrine that humans are animals in their essential identity and are persons only through their contingent properties.”It is with symbols as with words:“Men suppose their reason has command over their words; still it happens that words in return exercise authority on reason." Bacon

What are some stories about seeing spirit animals in their physical form in your everyday life?

Jason, my favorite spirit animal is a dog named “Elvis.” He took on toxic energy to help me and ended up with cancer. He and I went to a special treatment facility about twice a week for a year for him to get treatment. Finally, the cancer was just to much for him to deal with so I had him euthanized. But he had boundless energy and a playful mood until the very end. It was very sad for me to say goodbye to him when the time came. I think of him often, always with a smile and that “can do” attitude.May you find your own love, joy, and peace through the shortest route.
