How much money do I need to open a small restaurant?

Startup cost for a restaurant can be $40k and it can be $1 million. Let's discuss the lower end figure. If you find a location for rent that is already outfitted as a restaurant something like what you intend to operate you can be on the low end. I opened a burrito shop in 1995 for 25k in an ideal situation with a small location that only needed minor changes. The rent was $1200 per month. My dad put in 20k because he liked the idea of me trying something on my own. Here is a rough outline of my costs. 3000  Used walk-in cooler 500  used chargrill500 used refrigerator500 paint and inexpensive flooring1000 pay for friends to help paint etc. 3600 three months rent, first, deposit, and security3500 up front insurance cost (liability insurance)2000 plumbing (minimal)2000 electrical work (minimal)1500 exhaust system / fire suppression update5000 carpentry - counter area construction1500 food1000 furniture500 admin cost for licenses etc. When we opened we were losing money on operations for about a month.  So I had to ask a few relatives for small amounts of about $500 each. I "sold" part of the company to them for the money.  Later, when I set up a corporation, I made the ownership official.  Those investors made out well, later on, when I eventually bought them out. Our restaurant is counter service burritos. The staff when we opened was no more than three people at a time at first. The most we've spent on a new place was 500k about a year ago. We had a designer and architect and built a fancy burrito shop from scratch inside an empty space.

Why do so many restaurants only serve Pepsi or Coke but not both?

A2AIn the restaurant industry, in the United States, the equipment for used for dispensing soda is provided by the soda distributor. So if Coke has provided your soda gun, or your fountain system, they will not allow you to sell Pepsi products out of it. If you decide to switch, it's not an easy thing, because Coke won't be rushing their tech over to remove their equipment to make room for Pepsi to put their's in. The result of this is that the switching costs are VERY low for restaurants, so even though it can be a headache restaurants will jump from brand to brand to get the lowest costs on BIBs (Bag in Box syrup.) Savvy operators know that they drag their heels in removing the equipment. When I run into this problem, I tell the supplier, "I understand you're busy, but your equipment is hindering our ability to conduct operations, so we will remove it ourselves, and it will be here for your retrieval at your convenience." This results in two thing: They come right over and pick it up the next day,They never pick it up. You'd be amazed by the number of complete soda gun disperser systems in the basements and back rooms of so many restaurants. It's kind of a pain because you can't sell it as it's not your property, so it can get in the way, but if the competitor is willing to give locked in cheap prices, you've got to do what's best for your business. Just imagine this on a HUGE scale, like a flagship state university! I know of one such university which has been involved in soda wars for decades. The students will protest, and the university will throw Coke out and bring in Pepsi. Then Pepsi does something and the students protest. Back and forth it goes... The rumor now is that Coke - who currently has the contract - looses money on sales to that campus of over 30,000 students, faculty, and staff. They are willing to take a loss because of the massive amount of exposure. The feeling being that if you can get college students loyal to Coke, they will remain so for life, and at this campus they have no choice. If they want a soda product, it's going to be a Coke product. At least for another two years... Then it all starts over again when it comes time to renew the contract.

How long does it take for a mail from Albany, NY take to get to Riverhead, NY?

I’d imagine that it takes the same amount of time for the mail to get from Albany to Riverhead as it would to be delivered anywhere else in the same general area. For that matter, it’s usually that way across the country. Usually that’s about two days. Sometimes mail can get to its destination in just one.Today, unlike when I was born back in the 19th century (or so it sometimes feels), the mail delivery isn’t as slow as when we had to rely on the pony express. Although the term “snail mail” would have you believe it takes forever and a day, most mail gets to its destination PDQ (pretty damned quick).Funny you asked that question. Because just yesterday, about 1 pm, I brought a return of an item I got on Amazon to a local UPS store. I bought a bird bath fountain that was defective and the return was free. I elected to bring it to the UPS myself to expedite the matter because I too bought into the ‘snail mail’ thing. But, mus to my surprise, when I checked my Emails today, less than less than 24 hours later, I found a message from Amazon saying my money had been refunded because they’d already received the return item! So, snail mail? I think not and I’ll stand by that statement.I can’t fathom why you’d be so interested in the mail route for that particular area, being that the two locations are in the same state, therefore not far from each other. I’m assuming you’re trying to make a point? Maybe to someone with whom you’re having a small disagreement, shall we say? Perhaps somebody who claims not to have received something that you know well they did and you just wanted some ‘backup’ in writing. (I hope this suffices.)Well, whether I’m wrong or right, good luck! hope all works out well in the end. Although, in my experience, it usually doesn’t. One thing I’d keep in mind if I were you. And I‘m not, so I dare not assume that I know your circumstances. But, here goes anyway. As someone who’s most likely older than you, I’ll let you in on a secret that might save you a day’s worth of misery, or more. That is, life is very, very short. Much more so than we ever believe when we are in our 20’s or 30′s, or often even our 50’s. Most times, thought it may not seem like it when it’s happening, it’s better for all, especially yourself, to just “let it go.”Hope this helped, even if just a little bit. Have a great day anyway, or despite whatever. Or, at least, try to.
