What was bad about the F-4 Phantom wasn't the Phantom itself, it was the failure of the weapons it was supposed to carry.The Phantom turned into a big, expensive, heavy beast compared to the MiGs on the other side. It was highly capable, but inevitably, it would have to fight outnumbered by 2–1 or more. Not a problem when you're carrying four long-range AIM-7 Sparrows and four AIM-9 Sidewinder dogfight missiles, each with a kill probability of 90%. That should take out at least six opponents.Unfortunately the missiles did not deliver. In Vietnam, Sparrows had a pk of 8–10% and early Sidewinders about 15-20%. Which means that with your entire load of missiles -- and so great was the faith in them that the Phantom had been designed without a gun -- you could shoot down, on average, one enemy aircraft. Which was going to be a real problem when you were facing three of them.Fortunately the Big One never happened, and the Phantom eventually got better missiles and an internal gun. But as a fighter designed to tackle the Soviet hordes, in the early days at least, it had a serious problem.Interestingly, when the Phantom’s successor was designed, the high-cost, high-capability F-15 was accompanied by the low-cost F-16 to help deal with those numbers.
