What is the best way to learn Latex for formatting my dissertation?

My case is a bit unusual as I was “remastering “ my thesis after 20 years because the paper copies were starting to decay (before acid free paper you see).So I’m my case I sawed the spine off one of my theses, used a bulk scanner it turn it into a PDF and then used OCR to convert it to text. I then moved the text into a [math]\Latex[math] file. This was a useful exercise as I could concentrate on learning latex rather than generating content and learning latex simultaneously. In your case you might practice with things you’ve written in the past to achieve the same effect.

I wrote my PhD dissertation in LaTeX, but my advisor told me it needs to be in a format other than PDF to send to my committee members. He says it is too difficult to make comments or corrections on PDF. What is the best format for a dissertation?

The only format I can think of that some would find more convenient to mark up is Word, which has built-in tools for editing. However, rewriting your thesis in Word would be an enormous task with no benefit beyond appeasing any readers who might want access to Word-specific functionality.  I would suggest recommending tools for making notes on PDFs. I feel sure that every OS must have a sufficiently rich PDF viewer to support this kind of thing. On OS X, for example, Skim is free and quite full-featured. There's also the hard-copy approach if you have a reader who is averse to new technology. If that doesn't work, I would try explaining the amount of work and typesetting badness it would cost to offset the small amount of work that using a different piece of annotation software represents. Furthermore, since other students are likely to use TeX in the future, the start up cost of learning to mark PDFs can be amortized somewhat. Good luck.
