How crazy is the cost of living in Hawaii?

Hawaii is expensive in relation to the types of employment opportunities that exist there. NYC and Los Angeles are both more expensive but have many different types of industries that support a highly paid workforce. Hawaii's big business is tourism.

So, if you are transitioning from somewhere like LA or NYC and somehow have a highly paid corporate gig or are some kind of business owner that is doing well, you're not going to suffer much sticker shock. If you're going to piece a living together by working a minimum wage job then you will struggle in Hawaii, as you would anywhere else really.

Instead of focusing on those few items that you'll be paying a few pennies or quarters more for, let me tell you about some of the off setting costs.

Clothing. You will no longer need four seasons worth of clothing. Yes, a light jacket, maybe a sweater or two but no where near the full wardrobe worth of winter and fall clothing you'd be dealing with in a traditional full on four seasons state.

Driving. You will be doing less of it and at slower speeds than if you lived in say California, Texas or Florida. I travel extensively and one of the first things I notice on my mainland trips is the extra 20 miles per hour I must do just to keep up with traffic. The second thing I notice is the sheer distance I'm traveling to get around. This is simply not the case in Hawaii, though, as you spend more time in Hawaii you will come to think of the short distances you eventually will drive, as far. That's because your brain will get spoiled by the relatively short distances and the distances you can suddenly easily walk.

Car insurance. Mine went down from its cost on the mainland.

Taxes. Mine were lower at least, my deductions stayed roughly the same.
