What is the main internal and external conflict in "Flowers for Algernon"?

The main internal conflict seems to be Charlie Gordon coming to terms with his intelligence. At first, he has a below average intelligence which causes him to want to be become smarter, but when he does become smarter, he loses all of his friends and learns that eventually, his intelligence will be restored back to his previous intelligence level.

The main external conflict is probably Charlie Gordon VS society. At first, he is alienated from society because he is not smart enough but later on, he is alienated because he is too smart.
