What Is The Legal Age For No Longer Being Considerd A Child In England

In the 1940's and 1950's what age were you considered legally an adult?

Did they have like an age of majority for females and one for males like 18 for females and 21 for males.Did "teenagers" exist back then and what was the legal drinking age?Wasn't the age of majority 21 everywhere in the United States including drinking age?

In America, you are usually no longer considered a child when you turn 16. What age is this in the UK?

Not sure about the UK part of the question, but in the US, the premise is not quite complete:One reaches the Age of majority in the US once you’re 18, or 19 in a couple of states. In order to sign contracts without a guardian cosigner and do many other “adult” tasks, you must be the age of majority. The age of (sexual) consent varies by state, from 16 to 18: Ages of consent in the United States. You must be 18 in order to vote in all states. You must be 21 in order to legally buy alcohol in all states. (Note that the law is about purchase, not consumption)You can stay on your parent’s health insurance as a dependent until you’re 26.I’d guess the UK has its own array of similar laws and customs, probably with different ages…

At what age was someone considered an adult in Victorian England?

In most places now, 18 is the legal age of adulthood. I've tried to find out what was considered an "adult" in Victorian England, but all I found was articles about child labor and the age of consent. So, does anyone know at which age they drew a distinction between childhood and adulthood back in the late 1800's?

Back in the 1500s, were teenagers considered adults or children?

In the 1500s there was no concept of being a teenager or even of childhood as now understood. Instead, the key distinction was between age of (physical) dependency and age of independence. (For certain legal purposes you had to be 21, but that was a completely separate matter. There were usually also stipulated ages - which varied - for entering into and completing apprenticeships). The age of crossing over from dependence to independence varied quite a bit over time. Girls were often engaged at age 12 and expected to marry soon after their first periods. Boys were expected to do a full day’s hard work at 10-13. If kids broke the law they were usually subject to same punishments as adults, sometimes as early as age 7 (but see also below).Childhood as a full intermediate stage of development first emerged in subdued terms towards the very end of the Middle Ages but the concept did not really become popular till c. 1770 onwards and initially only among the middle classes. It was at that time that the first story books were written for children and that for the first time children were dressed distinctively. So the 1500s were seeing the very beginnings of the concept of childhood. There was a case in the North of England in the late 1500s where a boy of 10, who had acted as a look-out for a gang of much older robbers, would normally have been sentenced to death along with the rest. However, the judge said he had been shamelessly exploited by the older men and was extremely reluctant to send him to the gallows and was delighted when one of the jurors agreed to adopt the boy. This was most unusual for the time. The concept of adolescence as a stressful period of confusion and turmoil dates from the late 19th century. This book is a bit old now, but have a look at Centuries of Childhood - Wikipedia.

Would you consider a 16 year old a child?

A 16 year old is to all intents and purposes a child, both in law and practicality.  They have no experience of the adult world in reality, nor adult social skills., particularly for  business.  In fairness this is not down to the 16 year old, but the totally isolated and disassociated operation of the Education system and Business.Certainly in the UK, the Department of Education, never asks Commerce and Industry what they need school leavers to know. Consequently 16 year olds have to face this massive leap from the school life to business.A 16 year olds perspective on life is still very much through a child’s eye and do not have the same attitude to business or how to run their own affairs as a person of 18 does.Perhaps this would change if parents took on their responsibilities to prepare a child for adult life instead of leaving it to the schools.  Equally it would be even more helpful if the schools and the education departments of Government communicated with the real life world of adulthood and business. As an aside, why are schools providing sex education and not the parents?Increasingly it seems that Teachers are being expected to be loco parentis.

If a 15-year-old is not considered a child anymore, then why do they still act like children?

When you were 15, did someone flip a switch and go, “you're an adult now, better start behaving”, or did they gradually let you take on more responsibility?15 is usually the age where expectations start to arise. You are responsible for you and have to stand for your actions and decisions. However you still have the safety net of your parents. They're there for you to guide you into adulthood. As life progresses, the expectations on you increase and you are left more and more to autonomy. To be yourself, at 15 no one can raise you anymore, only show you how to be a good person.I am in that process myself. I agree, some do not take responsibility, and sometimes I loathe them for it. I think, “get your act together, you're almost adults”.However, I know that there is no such thing as a switch of adultness. It's a gradiant, a process. Some begin early, some later, and indeed some never.Do not blame the 15-year-old for being childish, wait and see - they might develope into a strong independent adult who cares for others and themself.Better yet, show them how to be an adult and do not treat them as children.Be an ideal. Realise what that means, and maybe you'll complete the gradiant fully.
