What Is The Most Depressing Movie You Have Ever Seen

What is the most depressing Bollywood movie you ever seen?

Sadma, it has to be Sadma. ‘Sadma’ is not a regular desi romance flick. Kamal Hasan’s plays Somprakash (Somu). His life takes an unexpected turn when he visits a city brothel at the insistence of his friend, and meets Reshmi (Sridevi). He finds Reshmi to be a strange case. Although a grown up woman, Somu discovers that she has the disposition of a six year old child. She talks, behaves, laughs, and cries like a kid, and Somu for his life cannot fathom how she got stuck in a brothel. He decides to help escape the place and ends up taking her with him to his place in Ooty. How the two grow closer, and become indispensible for each other over the course of time, is what the movie is all about. The story is unconventional- but it is actually the characterization that is the highlight of the movie. The characters of Somu and Reshmi are extremely well etched out and the director knows exactly how to present them. Their personalities are a study in contrast; while Somu is a taciturn and stolid fellow with a great strength of character, Reshmi is all that Somu isn’t- playful and joyous. Thus the child-like Reshmi ends up filling the void of loneliness in Somu’s life and the two end up sharing a lot of bitter-sweet moments that form the best moments of the film too. As the narrative progresses, it incorporates two delightful and soothing songs by Gulzar and Ilayaraaja-“Surmayee Ankhiyon Mein, Nanha Munna ek Sapna De Jaana”“Aye Zindagi, Gale Laga le”The climax of the movie is the most heart-wrenching you would ever see, Reshmi gets his memory back and fails to recognise Somu.  Somu try to imitate all the silly things which use to make Reshmi laugh but she ignore everything. His act in the last few minutes just tears the viewer apart. To be genuine I was never able to watch this movie again due to its tragic end. But if you havent seen it, its a must watch.P.S: visit Recall and Relish: Lost Chapters of Hindi Cinema  for more details.

What is the most depressing comic or movie that you have ever seen?

Hi Vili -I’d have to say that the original Crow series by James O’Barr is the most depressing comic I’ve ever read. The comic is considerably more violent than the movie that was made with Brandon Lee, and the protagonist is completely devoid of hope.Eric’s sole, and only reason, for existing is to dole out unmerciful justice for a brutal sadistic crime that was committed against him and his fiancé for no reason at all other than because of the evil that human beings are capable of.I do appreciate the story, and have autographed copies of the first issues, which O’Barr was gracious enough to sign for me. The art is outstanding, and I appreciate the story and regard The Crow as an amazing work of art, but at the same time it is a very depressing comic book.Thanks!D.-

What is the most depressing movie you have ever seen?

Requiem for a dream.

Different people, tragic ends. Euphoria does not last. The ghastly consequences of drug addiction has been detailed so raw, that'll make you squirm. Every potential addict must watch the movie hundreds of times.

What is the most depressing movie/anime scene you have ever watched?

Black LagoonWhat happens BEFORE and AFTER this scene is saddening and a tough pill to swallow. This girl (and her twin brother) have a horrific upbringing. Being forced to do child pornography, among other messed-up, horrible things like having to kill their own friends or be RAPED by their captives.Knowing this they turned out psychologically damaged, and become skillful serial killers. And as you can imagine, it doesn’t turn out pretty…-Assassination ClassroomAt the end of season 2, you will understand…It’s spoiler-heavy so you’ll have to watch it.-A Silent VoiceHard not to watch an anime movie where a disabled student is being bullied, picked on, and taken advantage of and not “feel” something for it.Especially when you realize what kind of plot twists this movie has in store for you.Movies like 5 Centimeters per second and Your Name are childish in comparison to the realistic sadness witnessed in A Silent Voice.-Worthy Mentions:Clannad After Story (2nd season).Elfen Lied.Black Bullet (over half-way through season 1).

Seniors, what is the most depressing movie you've ever seen?

There have been more than one.

It took years before I could prepare myself - to watch Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.

They were very well done but they made me feel sad. Both were reality and I knew what went on - wasn't good.

I have to agree. Sophie's Choice was a downer for me.

I have a deep need to watch - only feel good movies. I also have to read feel good novels - unless they are - like history of the North and South etc.

I feel too deeply - I remember watching an old movie and cried myself to sleep. I really shouldn't say I remember - cause I can't remember the name of it - but it was a sad romance.

Another - 'What Ever Happened To Baby Jane' - was horrible - with Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. 1960's movie.

'A Streetcar Named Desire' - with Marlon Brando - was a downer too.

Fun question to think about.
DeeJay - ---- and no - I wouldn't see them again.

What is the most depressing movie/drama you ever watched?

Donnie Darko!!one night, when i was looking for a movie. i came across this dark movie, shot in early 2000’s. The imdb review was more than 8, and the rotten tomatoes 90%, well should say this, i was so interested in watching this. But soon, it fell flat within just after the few minutes into the movie.though, the concept was damn good. a hallucinating teenager seeing a rabbit faced monster which tells that the world is coming to an end in a month and makes him do rubbish things. The sequences are too boring to make you watch. An hour of this movie will test your patience.P.s: its my opinion, you could well try it by yourself and let me know if i was wrong.
