Is Morocco considered part of Europe or part of Africa?

Since Morocco is on the African continent, it is geographically considered a part of Africa, though Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt are usually called "North Africa" and linked together with the Middle East with the title MENA (Middle East/North Africa). Moroccans do not see themselves as African, typically - they will say "Arab" first.

Morocco's culture is closer to Middle Eastern and European (specifically French) cultures than it is to most African cultures, although in the south of Morocco and the disputed Sahara territory, things are arguably more African.

Morocco is, however, an associate EU member, but will likely never be a full member of the EU.

What ethnicity are North African people?

Most North Africans are white Arabs. They are slightly darker than Europeans, but they are almost always considered to be white.

As you travel south, skin color tends to darken. For instance, people in southern Egypt are often called "Hamitic," which would be half way between Caucasian and *******.

Why do the people of North Africa have almost nothing in common with the rest of Africa or African people?

Berbers are Caucasian, and came from the middle east/North Iran around 7–9000 years ago. They share the light skin gene with europeans (originated 6–9000 years ago). Berbers were part of a massive migration out of the middle east /North Iran that split up into 3 groups. The indo europeans who invaded europe, the Indo Iranians who invaded Iran and Afghanistan, and the Arabids or Afro Asiatics who invaded North Africa, East Africa, and the rest of the middle east. This is all traceable through dna.Berbers migrated into Africa at a later date and are the newest people in Africa even though this occured 7–9000 years ago. This is opposed to other Africans who never left Africa.

I'm taking a trip to Tunisia. I speak French. Is it worth it to learn some phrases in Arabic for my travels?

I’ve been there. French is good enough.Although I was knowledgeable with the Egyptian and Levantine (mainly Syrian) dialects, I found that the local Arabic is much different from these. The Tunisians can understand these dialects, but will reply to you in their own Tunisian variety and, if you were never exposed to it, you will have a hard time understanding. And even if you already know some Arabic -as in my case - it will take you some time to pick up the local features. There is also Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), which only a relatively low percentage of the population can speak fluently. However, almost everything you see written in Arabic letters will be in MSA and not in Tunisian Arabic. All educated people are supposed to be able to read it at least, but their actual performance may vary.I ended up learning some words during my limited stay and practiced using them when doing shopping or chatting with the taxi drivers, just for fun. The more elaborate conversations I had in French. Even though my French is not really up to par, most Tunisians will speak simple French and it is very easy to understand them. The bottom line is that French will serve you well almost everywhere. You could learn some phrases from a phrasebook, but trying to learn Tunisian or any other variety of Arabic just for a short trip would be overkill.
