Why are certain Hindu Gods and Goddesses blue?

"One of the theories is that Vishnu, because of his association with water, is depicted blue; therefore all his incarnations including Krishna, are shown as such. In Hinduism, persons who have depth of character and the capacity to fight evil are depicted as blue skinned. ...

"The theory of the blue coloring of Krishna goes to the fact that the Creator has given the maximum of blue to nature i.e. the sky, the oceans, the rivers and lakes. The deity who has the qualities of bravery, manliness, determination, the ability to deal with difficult situations, of stable mind and depth of character is represented as blue colored. Lord Krishna spent his life protecting humanity and destroying evil, hence he is colored blue."

Does anybody know of any ancient gods or goddesses in latin-american culture that were revered? Preferably from the Arawak/Taino (Puerto Rican) Amerindians or basically to do with Puerto Rican Indian lore, but all latin-american countries open.

He would be well known for protecting the Innocent and helping those in need. He'll protect his loved ones, and he would Help Athena if she ever needed it. He'll fight for only for Justice or to protect someone that need it. he won't be the strongest of the gods he would be the second strongest (the strongest is honored to Athena) he would know almost everything Athena know only thing he won't know is the thing is isn't meant to know. So it's your turn now? Give it your best shot okay.

Why are Hindu gods/goddesses fat and sometimes blue skinned?

Ganesha is overweight for the same reason as a lot of other overweight people - because he is said to be fond of sweets. The other deities are not typically overweight, but your perceptions of what sizes define overweight may be different from those of the artists who create the images of the deities. He is NOT generally depicted as being blue, but more often as skin-coloured. An artist may however sometimes use blue as a approximation to the greyish colour of elephants (Ganesha has the head of an elephant).

Vishnu (and his avatar Krishna) are depicted with blue skin. Please read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vishnu#Iconography to understand more.

Shiva is often depicted as an ascetic, which means that his body would be marked with ash and dust, as is typical of ascetics. This would render his body greyish or whitish, and again, blue may be used by an artist as an approximation. It is not a logical approximation though, because Shiva's throat is supposed to be blue as the result of drinking poison to save the world (according to one legend detailed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halahala ).

Lakshmi is the divine consort of Vishnu. Amongst other things, she is supposed to be the personification of endless beauty and grace, and while more often depicted as skin coloured, some depictions may also use blue skin (blue being the colour of infinity and eternity).

What if you hear the voice of goddess Durga in your dreams?

I do not want to hurt anyone’s feeling by my response. So apologising first just expressing my opinionMother understands the thirst and hunger of a baby without any language. The Divine Mother in the similar way understands us in a much more deeper way.If She wants to convey something She may not resort to words. My faith in Maa Durga tells me that She can accomplish anything She desires She may not convey it through any mortal mediums. She is desire and the accomplishment Herself. As far as I know even Thakur Ramakrishna never claimed to hear Maa’s voice. He was just always immersed in Her service.Further, When you say Durga, is this what comes to your mind?(Image Source: Pahari Paintings)Durga is not just this a multi armed woman. But She is the infinite, the manifest and unmanifest energy. She is beyond our understanding. There is reason why She is called Parashakti. Our understanding is limited. We cannot truely understand Her.She is just immense. She loves us infinitely and with Her infinite love She guides in an unique way.At a spiritual level , when we meditate or any other spiritual practice (not religious rituals) our intuitive power develops but sometimes even our desires get mixed up with our intuitive abilities. It’s difficult to distinguish the two. So the best approach is to surrender and let Her decide. Most people who meditate know this, that sharpened intuitive ability definitely develops yet at times it gets mixed up with our own desire. So we have people who claim to be divine and giving accurate results in a few places, give ridiculous advice to eat red or green chutneys. Because the person himself was craving for a chutney, but it becomes difficult to separate the two so desire and intuition mix up.MAYBE your desire to hear a divine voice is so strong that you think you are hearing Ma Durga’s voice.Psychologists agree that the mind has immense potential it can imagine things to the minutest details.Further in the Durga Saptashati in the Devi Stuti She is praised in this way“Ya Devi sarvabhooteshu Bhranti-roopen sansthita.Namas-tasyai namas-tasyai, namas-tasyai namo namah”Translation: To that Devi who lives in all beings in the form of delusion.Salutations to Her, salutations, salutations again and again. It’s difficult to determine what the divine is trying to convey. But the outcome is always for the best.

In slumdog millionaire i dont understand what the little blue girl was and what she did?

It wasn't a blue girl. It's actually a hindu god named Lord Rama. In India, there are many problems with the relationship between hindus and Muslims. Since Jamal was muslim, the hindu were trying to kill them (including a little girl dressed as Lord Rama to show power and purity) and a riot broke out in an attempt to harm all the muslims. In hindu myth Lord Rama holds a bow and arrow (as she was doing in the movie) And its being said that if that riot hadn't broken out, he wouldnt have never seen Lord Rama, and his mother wouldnt have been killed by the hindus.

Hope this makes sense! :)
