What is the theme of a book?

Theme is the universal idea of the story. A universal idea is something that is applicable to all people, a fundamental truth that inevitably impacts our humanity. Theme is about raising questions and suggesting answers, but not necessarily clobbering readers over the head with a moral. Theme is a general message: truth and justice, do unto others, love conquers hate, etc. that everyone all over the world can understand.

What is the main theme of the book of Galatians?

The main theme is the grace of Christ. Paul warned the Galatians against turning away from the grace of Christ to a different gospel, which is not another. (Galatians 1:6-10)

Grace is the unearned, undeserved, unmerited favour of God. The moment we try to deserve it, it is no more grace. We are made righteous by faith in Jesus Christ, not by the works of the law - that is the grace of God. (Galatians 2:11-21)

When we believe that God made us righteous by faith, then we are blessed with believing Abraham. For Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us on the cross, that the blessing of Abraham might come upon us, who are heirs in Christ. (Galatians 3:1-29)

When we place ourselves under law, under the deserving system, we will not inherit the blessing of Abraham. We can only receive it by grace through faith in Christ Jesus. The law made us slaves, but grace made us mature sons and daughters of God; we are children of promise. (Galatians 4:1-31)

When we depend on our human efforts to get right with God, we have fallen from grace, and Christ would become of no effect to us. The works of the flesh will also manifest, such as hatred, jealousies and envy. But when we depend on God's undeserved favour based on Jesus' finished work on the cross, we will continue to enjoy Christ as our All in All - wholeness, healing, prosperity, preservation and deliverance. We will also bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness and self-control. Against such there is no law (for love is the fulfilment of the law). That's how we walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:1-26)

"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love." (Galatians 5:6)

"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but a NEW CREATION." (Galatians 6:15)

God bless you, my fellow new creation in Christ. :)
