What Is The Reputation Of Macallan Whisky

Why is Macallan Malt whisky so famous?

Macallan is famous because of 1) its successful branding, 2) the amount it produces, and 3) they consistently make pretty good whisky! The Brand: I don't know if you've noticed this, but the official name for this whisky is not Macallan, but “The Macallan.” It was and is packaged as a fancy upmarket single malt whisky. At a time when blended whiskies were way more popular and not many other single malt distilleries were known, Macallan set itself up as the drink for the connoisseur who prefers a single malt. Their whisky used to be matured proudly and exclusively in expensive Sherry casks (this is no longer the case) and this also added to the prestige of the campany. The marketing department has done very well promoting the image of the company: the packaging looks both classic and expensive, the name Macallan sounds Scottish, and the whisky has appeared in feature films such as James Bond: Skyfall, as well as being endorsed by the speaker of the House of Commons in the UK in 2001.The Production: The top sellers of whisky in Scotland are Glenfiddich, The Glenlivet, and The Macallan. Notice anything similar about these brands? Apart from the Scottish sounding names and packaging (which definitely does help with sales), they simply make more whisky than everyone else, which means their products will be more widely available. For comparison, The Macallan produces 8 million litres of alcohol a year, whereas a distillery that makes a comparable product, The Glendronach, produces only 1.3 million litres a year. The Macallan has absolutely saturated the market to such an extent that for many people it might be the only Single Malt they even know. The Whisky: It has to be said that The Macallan are pretty consistent in making a sherried-style whisky that is palatable to most people. The Macallan 18 is a prime example of what they are aiming for and I do not know many people who would say they dislike it. It is just a well made whisky: rich, juicy, red fruits, sweet but dry, long velvety finish that invites another sip. They are by no means the only distillery that makes this style of whisky (e.g. Aberlour, The Glendronach) but The Macallan definitely know what they are doing and do it well.

How good is the Macallan Single Malt whiskey?

Macallan is good whisky. It’s aged in ex-Sherry, or seasoned sherry, barrels which adds a fruity complexity to the maltiness. The 18-yr-old is particularly good, but it’s become very expensive. The 12-yr-old isn’t quite as good as it used to be, being aged in first-fill and refill barrels (it used to aged strictly in first-fill barrels). The bottle doesn’t tell you that, so they let you assume it’s the same as it always has been.Their name and reputation are well established and highly marketed, but there are many other whiskies aged in ex-Sherry barrels just as good for less money.Cheers!

What is the reputation of MacAllan Whisky?

This rich gold, single malt Scotch comes from one of the Highland's most respected whisky distilleries. Aged twelve years, this spirit has an enticing nose of vanilla, ginger, dried fruit, sherry sweetness and wood smoke. The palate is deliciously smooth, with flavors of rich dried fruit, balanced with wood smoke and spice.
For many years whisky experts have considered The Macallan 'the single malt by which others must be judged'.
A large crystal decanter filled with rare Macallan "M" whisky sold for $628,205 at a Sotheby's auction in Hong Kong in January 2014. That hefty price tag set a new world record for the most expensive single-malt whisky sold at auction.

Which is a nicer quality whiskey: The Macallan or Highland Park?

Great thing about scotch whisky is that they are all different, and depends on your taste, what are you looking for, and what is your (or your friend's) expectation.

Both The Macallan and Highland Park are on the sweater side of whisky, with The Macallan sweeter, and more wine-ish, and Highland Park felt like eating an orange, and then chew on the left over orange peel, as it turns from sweet to bitter.

Since I myself is an Islay whisky fan, I prefer Highland Park since it's a little smoky and peaty, which I find it lacking a little in The Macallan (ofcourse haven't tried every single Maccalan yet).

Highland Park is also a very all-rounded whisky:

Fruity? Checked.
Floral? A little bit, good enough.
Malt? Yes, but felt like it's hidden behind all that honey smell. Cream cracker too.
Dry? Oh yes turns very dry and bitter after the sweetness.
Peat? A little, good enough, since some people might not like it.
Smoke? More like steam to me but interesting enough.

If your friend is a wine lover, maybe the Macallan is good, else, Highland Park for it's rounded nature. Or, a bottle of Laphroaig, Ardbeg, or Lagavulin from Islay, but your friend would either love or hate you ;)

I can't help with the price, since I find the price to be all over the place depends on location.

Glenlivet 18 yr. Scotch or The MaCallan 18 yr. Scotch?

Glenlivet 18 usually tastes more vanilla-y, Macallan is more chocolate-y.

Trick to drinking 18-yr scotch is to lick it off your lips, not to drink it fast. In a glass, 1 or 2 fingers (no ice!) horizontally is the standard serving.

Recently, Glenlivet 18 made within the last 2 years has a peppery flavor I don't care for. If you can find 1987 or 1988 Macallan 18 that's excellent. I haven't tried the more recent ones.

DO NOT GET THE FINE OAK ones. They're horrible.

Would anyone really drink the 60-year-old Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 single malt whisky that just sold for over 1 million dollars?

This is a fun question, thank you!In a word, yes.If people who earn 50K a year will buy a 500 dollar bottle once a year, simple math tells us this is one percent of their yearly gross salary. Therefore, taxes aside, a person who earns 100 million dollars per year should have no problems with splashing out on a million dollar bottle, and cracking it open. If you’ve got the money, you may as well enjoy it! You can’t take your money with you when you die!CheersMarkWhiskyWhistlea #whiskytube whisky channel“Your guide to the spirits-ual world!”youtube.com/WhiskyWhistle

Why is Macallan scotch so expensive?

There are a couple reasons, some legitimate, others manufactured. They recently constructed a tens-of-millions-of dollars state-of-the-art facility with large capital investments in new stills, visitor center, architecture, and equipmentThey use top quality ingredients, in particular special species of barleyThey have experienced, highly-paid professionalsThey are highly marketed (costing lots o’ money)They have a reputation that goes back to the ’70s, which persists today, because many people just drink what they knowBecause they can charge a lotPersonally, I don’t think most of their whisky expressions are all that great. The ones that are really delicious, like the 18-yr, may not be a good value. Macallan rests too much on their reputation, while others have been more innovative.Cheers!

What scotch is similar to Macallan 12 year?

Glenfiddich 18 yr old is similar, and believe it or not Bushmills Black Bush (Irish Whisky) is also similar. Both are aged in Oloroso Sherry casks, which explains the similarities. For the money the Bushmills is really a great deal as it costs about half the price of the Macallan (which I agree is a great Scotch).

Which whisky suits you best?

I'm now sat with a Glenfiddich caoran reserve because I couldn't bear to open the Jura 1810 single malt while I am all alone.

The Glenmorangie, Bladnoch and Bowmore are well on their way to having been taste tested. (Though I must admit to starting young, whiskey was the tott of choice when I was teething as a child, blame my grandmother)...
