Wow.. I dont know what "reading into the DPT degree" you have done.. but it has certainly led you down the wrong path. You couldnt be any more wrong. My guess is that you got this opinion from someone who either holds a grudge against PT's, or is just plain ignorant to the entire field and has no clue what theyre talking about. It is true that we are making a switch from a bachelors degree to a masters to a doctorate in a relatively short amount of time. One good reason is the answer Mistify gave you. Another large contributor to this, is the fact that PT is a field that is growing at an exponential rate. Not just in job availability (we can basically work anywhere we want). Not just job satisfaction (we are #3 or 4 on the list of happiest professionals out of every career out there). But in the crazy amount of research that has made medicine what it is today. It's true we were still *mostly* receiving bachelors degrees 20 years ago, but then again, 20 years ago, there was no internet, no one owned a pager, let alone a cell phone, and i wouldnt be terribly surprised if the asker of this question was even born yet. The growing profession has become incredibly complex compared to where it was, and the new degree is conforming to this. I can tell you from experience, I am a DPT student right now, and the amount of information i have learned about the human body, how it moves, how it works, how it heals, etc, is worthy of a Doctorate. Trust me, i study 24/7 and still cant figure it all out. Therapy has come a long way, and those who have a Doctorate in it went to school for a long time, and worked really hard. Politics has nothing to do with that. Its about treating our patients, not about getting the respect of being called a Doctor, not about the power of seeing patients before they see their primary care physician, and its certainly not about the money..any PT knows that, lol.

First...all PTs are called PT, whether they are a DPT, MPT, or BSPT. People can certainly choose to put their degree after their title, but I see no reason why. The debate about PT and DPT has been ongoing for several years. However, I think saying that PTs without a DPT "don't care much for DPTs" is a little bit overblown. Experience still counts for a lot in this field and advanced certifications and clinical specialties even more. I'd much rather trust the opinion of a BSPT who has their OCS certification as opposed to a new graduate DPT. However, there are fundamental differences between an MPT/BSPT and a DPT. First, MPT and BSPTs are really more closely related than the DPT is related to an MPT. I know because I originally had a BSPT and went to teach in an MPT program...it was the same coursework...only spread out more. However, when I went back to complete the DPT, there were some very fundamental differences. The focus with a DPT is much more on understanding how to function as a direct access provider...having a more indepth knowlege of radiology, pharmacology, and especially differential diagnosis. The issue here is that those with DPTs are better prepared to accept patients under direct access where it exists. ...but I would argue against the fact there is anamosity between those with a BS/MPT versus a DPT. I would, however, say that I do cringe when I hear my colleagues flaunt the fact that they have a DPT whether they are talking to their colleagues or a patient. It's just not professional unless the person specifically asks.
