What Is The Source And Length Of Blue Nile

What is the source of the White Nile?

The White Nile: Lake Victoria, Uganda

The Nile has its sources in Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, and Burundi.
A main source is the White Nile originating in Uganda and Burundi. It contributes with 16%, but this is a more steady flow. Without it, the river Nile would run dry in May. As there are many single contributors to the White Nile, it is a question of definition on where the Nile really starts. The longest stretch of the Nile comes with the start of Kyaka river in Burundi, close to large Lake Tanganyika. This passage goes through Lake Victoria, then Victoria Nile, Lake Albert, Albert Nile, which across the Sudan border is called Mountain Nile. Mountain Nile joins other rivers of Sudan to form the White Nile.

The White Nile is the section of the Nile between Malakal and Khartoum, The Sudan.
It is formed by the confluence of the Mountain Nile (Bahr al-Jabal) and the Sobat River above Malakal, and flows for about 500 miles (800 km) northeast and north past ar-Rank, Kusti (railway bridge), ad-Duwaym, and Jabal al-Awliya' (irrigation dam) to join the Blue Nile at Khartoum and form the Nile proper. The total length of the White Nile, including its major tributary, the Mountain Nile, is 1,295 miles (2,084 km).

What is the white nile and blue nile?

The Nile s a major north-flowing river in Africa, generally regarded as the longest river in the world. The Nile has two major tributaries, the White Nile and Blue Nile, the latter being the source of most of the Nile's water and fertile soil, but the former being the longer of the two. The White Nile rises in the Great Lakes region of central Africa, with the most distant source in southern Rwanda [show location on an interactive map] 2°16′55.92″S 29°19′52.32″E / -2.2822, 29.3312, and flows north from there through Tanzania, Lake Victoria, Uganda and southern Sudan, while the Blue Nile starts at Lake Tana in Ethiopia [show location on an interactive map] 12°2′8.8″N 37°15′53.11″E / 12.035778, 37.2647528, flowing into Sudan from the southeast. The two rivers meet near the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

Why are they called white nile and blue nile?

White Nile
The source of the Nile is sometimes considered to be Lake Victoria, but the lake itself has feeder rivers of considerable size. The most distant stream emerges from Nyungwe Forest in Rwanda, via the Rukarara, Mwogo, Nyabarongo and Kagera rivers, before flowing into Lake Victoria in Tanzania near the town of Bukoba.
The Blue Nile Falls fed by Lake Tana near the city of Bahar Dar, Ethiopia forms the upstream of the Blue Nile. It is also known as Tis Issat Falls after the name of the nearby village. The Nile leaves Lake Victoria at Ripon Falls, near Jinja, Uganda, as the Victoria Nile. It flows for approximately 500 km (300 miles) farther, through Lake Kyoga, until it reaches Lake Albert. After leaving Lake Albert, the river is known as the Albert Nile. It then flows into Sudan, where it becomes known as the Bahr al Jabal ("River of the Mountain"). At the confluence of the Bahr al Jabal with the Bahr al Ghazal, itself 720 km (445 miles) long, the river becomes known as the Bahr al Abyad, or the White Nile, from the white-ish clay suspended in its waters. From there, the river flows to Khartoum. When the Nile flooded it left this rich material named silt. The Egyptians used this soil to farm.

Blue Nile
The Blue Nile (Black Abay to Ethiopians; Bahr al Azraq to Sudanese) springs from Lake Tana in the Ethiopian Highlands. The Blue Nile flows about 1,400 km (850 miles) to Khartoum, where the Blue Nile and White Nile join to form the "Nile proper". 90% of the water and 96% of the transported sediment carried by the Nile[3] originates in Ethiopia, with 59% of the water from the Blue nile alone (the rest being from the Tekezé, Atbarah, Sobat, and small tributaries). The erosion and transportation of silt only occurs during the Ethiopian rainy season in the summer, however, when rainfall is especially high on the Ethiopian Plateau; the rest of the year, the great rivers draining Ethiopia into the Nile (Sobat, Blue Nile, Tekezé, and Atbarah) flow weakly.

How long does it take to journey up the river Nile on a boat?

-- Mediterranean Sea to Khartoum Sudan (sail boat 4 to 6 days assuming a good wind) it is a thousand miles but to where starts the Nile it is 4 thousands miles (sail boat 20 to 30 days assuming a good wind) The Nile (Length 6,650 km (4,132 mi) ) is a major north-flowing river in Africa, generally regarded as the longest river in the world.

The northern section of the river flows almost entirely through desert, from Sudan into Egypt, a country whose civilization has depended on the river since ancient times. Most of the population of Egypt and all of its cities, with the exception of those near the coast, lie along those parts of the Nile valley north of Aswan; and nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river. The Nile ends in a large delta that empties into the Mediterranean Sea.

Why is the nile river also called blue nile and white nile .?

The River Nile has two origins the main one comes a long way from Many coutries south of Sudan so it arrives in Khartoum the capital city of Sudan all tired and slowed down in terms of strength of its current that is the White nile.
That same spot meets the nile comming from Ethiopia with a very strong and fresh current and its very fast and that is the Blue nile.
The name is mainly due to the strengthe of teh current.
I was one day staying at the Sheraton Khartoum and my room had a great view of that exact meeting point of both niles and its really a worderfull sight.
Its as if two people meeting, one is old and slow and calm and the other is just exploding with energy and power.

Hope that sheds some light on that matter.
