What Is The Symbolism Behind A Bird And A Cage

Trifles by Susan Glaspell. Symbolism of birdcage?

I'm having trouble elaborating on the sybolism of the bird and bird cage in the play Trifles by Susan Glaspell. I know that the bird symbolizes Mrs. Wright. Is the cage her life? Was she abused? Why was it bent? If you have any thoughts you could offer to get my brain headed in the right direction I would appreciate it.

What does a dead bird symbolize?

I’ve read your comment in the comments section.Outer life can be like a night dream, and can be interpreted like a night dream. In addition outer life events can be understood as not being an accident but having intent by Nature, for Nature does speak to us if you have the ears and eyes to see and hear it.Only you can decide if you want to understand your finding this dead bird by your car much like a night dream including it being purposeful.Given their are two birds can be important, for two represents something that’s on the edge of consciousness, your consciousness, awareness.A bird in a dream generally represents thoughts, ideas, plans including intuition. The live bird seems to be mourning the dead bird.A car in a dream represents the ego of the dreamer.Without knowing what plans, ideas, thoughts, you may be dealing with in life I can say nothing more except to say death in a dream represents the coming of the new, for the new cannot come until the old is gone.Outer life events as you describe can also represent a Felix Culpa, a happy accident, that on the surface appears to be anything but happy can over time turn out to be just what was needed. There is life after life.Best wishes.

What is the deeper meaning behind the poem Caged Bird by Maya Angelou?

Maya Angelou’s Poem: I know Why The Caged Bird Sings is a real beauty. To break this down into its component parts one needs to understand how the core metaphor works. So let’s keep it simple.A Bird in a Cage. yeah. Thats simple enough. And it sings! Thats an added quality of sound and emotion. The ‘Bird’ in this particular poem is the African-American women. She ‘sings’ means a voice as any other beautiful bird. She sings like all those exuberant African -American women like Mahalia Jackson, Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston, Donna Summers, etc and yet those singers felt trapped in a ‘cage’. The cage is a metaphor for society just like the white American society around the ‘ bird’ in a cage singing to them. The first verse expresses the freedom of the ‘bird’ in its natural habitat. The wind rushing at it and the ‘singing’ in the wind expresses freedom. Maya uses alliteration and sound effects to show this symphony of freedom in the wind. At the same time she shows how this beautiful bird feels trapped in a cage and held with the ‘bars’ of a chord in a cage. The pun is in the word ‘bars’- multiple meanings ( whisky bars, metal bars, musical bars and discreetly ‘barrs’).The next verse expresses a comparison between being caged and free. The metaphorical chains in the form of a cage has depressed the African American to flourish in this discriminatory society- yet the spectators relish its music and cry for freedom. There is sarcasm in this line. The last verse speaks of freedom. The bird set free and in flight is a much more beautiful bird than one caged in metal strips ( racism and hatred) and unable to express itself fully. Maya uses ‘he’ as the vehicle to express this anguish. Yet it includes many feminine/human qualities in every verse.Maya herself was a performer. An actress and singer and enjoyed fame and fortune as an accomplished actress. She took to writing from a avery early age and published her works as she wrote them.I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings is one of her most quoted works of poetry. It has meaning in every society where racism and discrimination exists and this is an enormously enriching piece of work.Anytime you feel trapped in an uncomfortable situation or society, in a traditional, orthodox ritual just read this poem and understand it your own way and you will then know what it feels like to be discriminated, ridiculed, hated, suppressed, disadvantaged or downtrodden. The poem will become your own voice. Thanks Maya! Thanks for the A2A

What are some symbols for "caged bird" poem by maya angelou?

Maya has written a short story about this cage bird theme (the poem does not appear in the story). she writes about her mother being called names by the neighborhood children and her mother just silently stood there because she was unable to talk back to the kids (because townspeople would have run her out of town for "talking back" to white people). but Maya felt her mother's pain of being insulted by kids. when they leave, the mom rejoices that she has Maya and her family and friends and tries to think of better times which are hopefully ahead, even if only in our dreams.

What do you think the meaning is behind this quote? "Birds born in a cage think flying is an illness"? (Polls)?

The meaning of the quote is when a bird is born and spends its years living in a cage, it is conditioned to believe that living in a cage is how life is. It knows no better than staying behind bars and being a submissive servant. A bird is made to fly, that's its natural instinct, and its very symbolic for freedom and peace. A cage symbolizes detainment, punishment, imprisonment and things of that nature. The bird is forced to believe a lie that flying is impossible, or those that fly are wrong and foolish. The bird then spends its life restricting its natural urges, forced to believe that it is dirty and wrong, and underlying shame ensues. This is brainwashing, how to control a nation.

The whole meaning of the quote relates to society and how those in power look down on others and always say "You're wrong for being this way! You're wrong for thinking that! You should be ashamed of yourself!" And ppl from a young age are fed this lie, you can follow your dreams, as long as it fits the societal norm. Restriction on freedom. But life is so short, why spend it in a cage being a slave when you can spread your wings and fly to freedom.
