Your grandmother needs your help. She has $50,000 to invest. Part of this money is to be invested in non insured bonds paying 15% annual interest. The rest of this money is to be invested in a government-insured certificate of deposit paying 7% annual interest. She told you that she requires $6000 per year in extra income from both of these investments. How much money should be placed in each investment?

Help with solving system of three equations w/elimination?

(1) -x - 5y - 5z = 2
(2) 4x - 5y + 4z = 19
(3) x + 5y - z = -20

add equation (1) and (3)

-x - 5y - 5z = 2
x + 5y - z = -20 --> both x and y terms cancel
-6z = -18 so z=3

add equation (2) and (3)
4x - 5y + 4z = 19
x + 5y - z = -20
5x + 3z = -1 plug z=3 in this equation
5x + 9 = -1
5x = -10 so x=-2

plug x=-2 and z=3 into any equation above (like (3))

x + 5y - z = -20
-2 + 5y - 3 = -20
5y - 5 = -20
5y = -15 so y=-3

so
x=-2
y=-3
z=3

hope that helps

Stupid question - How do you enter x squared on a calculator?

Hi,

For x², you can press the x key, just to the right of the green alpha key and then press the squared (x²) key, just above the log key, to the left of the comma key. So if you wanted fifteen squared, you could type in 15 and press the squared key. Your screen would show 15² and when you hit enter, you'd get the answer of 225.

Any other exponent except for x² needs to use the carat, ^, to show that the next thing is an exponent. So x³ would be entered as x^3 on your calculator.

As for your equation, 12 = 5x + 2, you can move all the terms of your equation to one side so the equation equals 0. You don't even need to combine the like terms. So you could make this equation 5x + 2 - 12 = 0. Press the [Y=] button on your calculator and enter this equation so that Y1 = 5x + 2 - 12 (Don't put the "= 0"). Then if you press [GRAPH], you will see a graph. The point where it equals zero is the x intercept. This would be your answer for the problem. If it is an integer value, the way you can verify its value is to press [2nd] and [GRAPH], it will take you to a table of points on this graph. You will see that when x = 2, y = 0. That tells you that 2 is your solution.

If you had an equation like 10x - 24 = 0, you could enter the equation as Y1 = 10x - 24. When you graph this or if you solved it, you'd get an answer that is not an integer value. To find it on the calculator with your equation in Y1, press [2nd] and [TRACE] to get to the CALC commands. Go to the command zero and press Enter. For left bound, either press the left arrow until the cursor is to the left of the x intercept, or type in a number that is on the screen but smaller than the x intercept, like the number 0. Then for the right bound, either press the right arrow until the cursor is to the right of the x intercept, or type in a number that is on the screen but larger than the x intercept, like the number 7. then for guess get close to the intercept and press Enter. (When there's only 1 intercept, you can just press Enter.) The calculator will print on the screen that the x intercept is at x = 2.400000 and y = 0.

I hope that helps!!

How do I get the x-intercept and y-intercept from an equation?

I need to know this, so can you give me an explanation of how it works and the answer? By the way in in 9th grade Algebra Honors, just in case you needed to know that.

Exact differential equations, line integrals, double integrals, and Green's Theorem?

I 'm studying calculus and I have no idea what's going on in the class right now. Could you please help me with the following problems? Even if you don't know how to do them all, any help is appreciated.

I don't actually need to see this one worked out, but if you could tell me the steps to go through, that would be great!
#1. (a) Prove that the differential equation dy/dx = (10xy + 1/x) / (9y1/2 – 5x2) is exact.
(b) Find the general solution of this differential equation.
(c) Determine the particular solution satisfying the initial value condition y(1 ) = 4.

For this one, I just need to know how to set up the double integral:
#2. Calculate the volume under the surface z = ƒ(x,y) = 4x2 + 3y2 above the region
R={(x,y) : x2 ≤ y ≤ x1/2 , 0 ≤ x ≤ 1}; i.e., evaluate the double integral of this function ƒ over the parabolic region R.

Could you please show me how the line integral is calculated, and how to set up Green's Theorem?
#4. Let C be the simple closed curve composed of the parabola C1: y = x2 and the line C2: y = 5x traveled counterclockwise from (0,0) to (5,25) and from (5,25) back to (0,0), parametrized respectively by r1 = [t t2]t= 0 t = 5 and r2 = [t 5t]t= 5 t = 0 .
Define the vector function W = [7y 13x] on the region R enclosed by C.
(a) Calculate, directly from the definition of a line integral, the line integral around C of the differential form 7y dx + 13x dy.
(b) Calculate the value of this line integral by using Green’s Theorem.

Which answer is correct for the equation 3-3*6+2=? -13 or -17?

-13This BODMAS always lead to the confusion but only when if you are not aware of its rule.BODMAS means Bracket Open Divide Multiply Add Subtraction. In BODMAS questions BRACKETS () helps alot and elminate many confusions.In our question 3–3*6+2 we dont have divide so we will go for next i.e MULTIPLY. Put the bracket. And solve it first. 3-(3*6)+2(3*6)=18this will make our equation: 3–18+2Again put the bracket. 3(-18+2).Here you may ask one doubt WHY DID I INCLUDED MINUS SIGN OF 18 IN THE BRACKET.When we do Addition or Subtraction we always consider the sign of every number.Examples- (-10+2) = -8. SINCE “+”and “-” together results “-” hence we subtracted 2 from 10 and got 8. Now we will see which one is greater 10 or 2. Ofcourse, it is 10 and it is with the MINUS (-) sign hence ans. i.e 8 will take its sign and our ans for this example will be -8.Another example I’d like to discuss so that in future it will be helpful for you.Let's consider (-2–3). Ans will be “-5”. As per the above explanation we will see the sign of the both the numbers. Both have MINUS sign and “-” and “-” together results addition. hence we will add 3 and 2. Now again we will check which one is greater 2 or 3. It is 3 and it is with the minus sign. That's why ans is. “-5”.From the above examples what we concluded are:-Always put the bracket and in bracket dont forget to include their respective signs. i.e “+” or “-”.After performing operation dont forget to check which one is greater and give its sign to the ans.And remember for operation, for same signs do addtion and for opposite signs do subtraction.Now we can proceed with our actual questionwhere we left it.3(-18+2).=> 3–16 {.: we subtracted because we have opposite signs and -16 because 18 is greater and it has minus sign }=> (3–16) = -13 {.: minus sign because 16 is greater }.I hope all above explanations will be helpful to solve other questions.Goodluck!

How do you solve algebra equations using a calculator?

I am assuming you are talking about a scientific calculator because with a normal one, it's not possible. I will use a Casio fx-991 ES to demonstrate.This is how the calculator looks.Now, I will give step by step instructions for basic algebra calculations using a calculator.Linear equationsFinding values using linear equations is one of the easiest tasks. Step 1- Type in the equation. For typing the variable, x in this case, press the alpha button and then press the bracket button ")". For equal to sign press alpha + the button which has calc written on it. Step 2- Now press shift+calc and you will get this on your screen. Step 3- Now, just press the "=" button and you will have the value of x. Simultaneous equationsThe simultaneous equation solved here would be in the form of ax+by=c.Step 1- Press mode setup and then press 5. Then press 1. After doing that, you will get this screen.Step 2- Just enter the values a,b,c for both equations.After typing the value for a press = button for inputting next value. Also, if there is no value for a and the equation only has the variable without any coefficient, then input 1 for such a case. Remember, if its -x for example, then input -1.Step 3- Now, just press = button once for the value of x and another time press it for the value of y. Quadratic equationEquations in the form ax²+bx+c=0 can be solved using this method.Step 1- Repeat step 1 of the previous instruction ie simultaneous equation. Instead of pressing 1,press 3 this time. You will get this screen in front of you.Step 2- Type in the values of a,b,c . The equation I will solve is x²+7x+12=0.Step 3- You will have your result by pressing the = button once for the first value of x and second time for the second value of x. Cubic equationThe method remains the same which was for quadratic equation. The only difference : press 4 instead of 3 in step 1. Its not necessary that you use the same calculator I am using. Newer versions of this calculator have come in the market and you can use them as well. There will be no or very slight difference in the method because at last they are all basic scientific calculators.

Please EXPLAIN to me how you solve these rational equations?

Marian can weed 1/3 of the garden in an hour (since it takes her 3 hours for the whole thing)
Robin can weed 1/4 of the garden in an hour (since it takes 4 hours for the whole thing)

together, they can weed 1/3 + 1/4 = 4/12 + 3/12 = 7/12 of the garden in an hour

if they week 7/12 in an hour, it will take them 1 / (7/12) = 12/7 of an hour to finish

12/7 = 1 5/7 hour working together

this makes sense: two people like Marian could finish in 1.5 hours (half of 3) and two people like Robin could finish in 2 hours (half of 4)
so these two together take something in the middle
1.5 < 1 5/7 < 2

the other's aren't clear:

assuming that it's y - (6/y) = 5
multiply by y:
y^2 - 6 = 5y
y^2 - 5y - 6 = 0
now factor:
(y - 6)(y + 1) = 0
so either y - 6 = 0 ==> y = 6
or y + 1 = 0 ==> y = -1

two solutions: y = -1 or y = 6
(and they both check)

**
1/(t - 2) = t/8?
cross-multiply
8 = t^2 - 2t
t^2 - 2t - 8 = 0
(t - 4)(t + 2) = 0
so either t - 4 = 0 ==> t = 4
or t + 2 = 0 ==> t = -2
two solutions: t = -2 or t = 4

that's a start... more to follow, but try the rest using these techniques
