I wear them all the time and I find that even with washing them frequently and using anti-disinfectant spray they will still build up bacteria that will cause athletes foot. I have 2 pair of dress shoes, 1 brown and 1 black, leather and very high quality. They get polished often and last quit awhile if taken care of properly. I have 1 pair of flip-flop/beach shoes that get replaced when needed.Now my wife is another story. We both have a high heel fetish and I will purchase two or more pairs for her a month, that is in addition to what she will buy. They range from $50 to more obscene amounts. You wear sneakers or boots if you are lucky. In the state I live in you couldn’t get shoes sent to you from the streets, so you get state issue shoes. Sneakers with clear soles and Velcro. The soles were clear so you couldn’t hide stuff and unlike a lot of shoes didn’t have a metal shank in the sole. If you had a job in someplace besides the kitchen they issued you boots. The boots also didn’t have a metal shank. You were given shower shoes as well to help prevent the spread of athlete’s foot (didn’t help much).Some dopes walk around in their shower shoes. Those are an orange flip flop thing kind of like sliders. We called those suicide shoes. If you had to get into a fight, flip flops aren’t exactly the shoe of choice. Not to mention, you have to be one tough S.O.B. to look tough in shower shoes. I have seen guys wait for the chance to catch someone in their shower shoes just to get an edge in an attack.Most institutions require you to wear state issue or certain approved shoes like new balance for medical conditions that required more support. You need to get a medical approval for those. I was fortunate to acquire a couple of pairs of those new balance shoes from guys that were leaving. Thankfully the C.O.s never got me on having property I wasn’t issued.I will tell you though, it is possible to run the track in those stupid state issue Velcro black shoes with the clear soles. I would burn a pair up every 2 months or so, but they always gave me more. I’d have holes in my shoes and could usually write up a kite and have new shoes within 2 weeks. I don’t think they were designed for running 30 miles a week, but it’s what I had and they stayed on my feet.I can’t complain though. A lot of people’s hard earned dollars paid the taxes to buy me those shoes so I could run and try to keep my head right. I appreciate that I had the luck to have shoes.
