What Is This Hernia Heart Attack Help

Is a heart attack a painful death?

I was suppose to have breakfast with my Dad to celebrate his birthday so I called the night before to make sure it would happen since he kept putting it off. I called my step mom and she told me he was not feeling well and was going to bed so I made the choice not to talk to him. I was mad thinking it was an excuse not too see me the next morning I found out through a text he had died from a heart attack. From what I could get from her is she slept on the couch so she wouldn't get sick and slept until morning. After waking up she went to check on him and noticed something was wrong and called her kids then after they arrived she called 911. It appeared he had woken up and knew he was in trouble and so he reached across the bed grabbed her shelf and knocked it over yet nobody heard the sound of it and her stuff hitting the floor and so he died. She said that due to his coloring the paramedics had told her that there was nothing she could have done to save him if she had known. After two years of being haunted by trying to figure out his final moments I finally learned what it would have been like. I am not going to tell you your Dad didn't feel any pain because all heart attacks are different with different symptoms for different people. But realize that he would have been unconscious within minutes so he would not not have felt it for very long. I cannot imagine what it is like to have to see that but I hope you can find solace to put you at ease. It's a long road ahead I hope you stay strong and have a good support system.

Can a hiatal hernia or GERD cause heart attack-like symptoms and difficulty breathing?

About me: I'm a 23 year-old female. I'm not overweight, I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, and I don't do drugs. I also don't consume a lot of caffeine. Here's the problem:

When I was around 13, I was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and also as having a hiatal hernia. I was able to manage it pretty well by taking medicine up until July of last year, when I started getting sharp, stabbing chest pains out of nowhere. Whenever this happens, it feels like I'm about to have a heart attack. The pain doesn't usually last very long (maybe 10 seconds or less), but it's always VERY painful. It happens about every two or three days.

I also can't take a deep breath and feel really short of breath. This happens on and off and usually coincides with the chest pain. I noticed when I'm like this, I can't hold my breath underwater for very long (maybe 4 seconds).

My doctor said he would send me to see a cardiologist and then a gastroenterologist. I saw the cardiologist, who ran a bunch of tests and said my heart was fine.

My next appointment with my general practitioner was 30 minutes before his office closed, and I was very rushed. I didn't even wait in the waiting room. The doctor (maybe because he was in a hurry) didn't even mention sending me to a gastroenterologist and put me on an anti-depressant instead, saying the pain and shortness of breath might be from depression. I've been on it for over two weeks now, and it hasn't helped at all. In fact, while on it, I had the worst chest pain yet, lasting almost a full 30 seconds! I just about keeled over in pain!

This is majorly affecting my life, and I've gone entire nights without sleep. I feel like the doctor has already given up.

So the question I really want to know is, is it possible that all of this could be caused by my hiatal hernia and/or GERD? If so, can it be fixed and how? If not, what could it be? Should I ask my doctor to refer me to a gastroenterologist?

If anyone actually reads this novel of a question, thank you for taking the time to read this and answer :)

VA claim on enlarged heart, GERD, hiatal hernia?

I was in the military for 10 years.Over the course of my service I complained about chest pains. When I seperated in July 2007 and move to another state I filed my VA disabilty claim. They had me see a doctor in Nov 2007 and that doctor fount an enlarge heart, hernia, GERD....VA denied my claim and said I abused alcohol(which they dont have proof of that cause I never did, I told the VA doc that diagnoised me I have maybe 3 drinks out of a month) and denied my elarged heart claim. They said the hernia did not happen while I was on active duty.Keep in mind this was 4 months after I left the military. I have a complete copy of my medical record over a 10 year period where I always complained about chest pains. Really, what are the odds of this happening 4 months after discharge? Is this doctor trying to throw me under the bus?

Why is there so much pressure on my chest, like a heart attack, after an inguinal hernia surgery that I had yesterday? I can hardly breathe when I stand up, and there is so much pain.

You should call 911 or go to ER if you are having pains like a heart attack . It might actually be a heart attack.I had inguinal hernia surgery in August 2016. I was told that I would have hiccups and gas because the surgery introduces air into the body. I had both those symptoms.I did NOT have any discomfort that resembled a heart attack. If I had experienced such symptoms you can rest assured that my first line of inquiry would NOT have been Quora.I suggest that you turn off your computer and get thee hence to an emergency room if you are not dead already.

How can you tell if your sharp chest pains are not a sign of heart attack?

If you take an antacid or slippery elm and it goes away it could be heartburn. My heartburn comes as severe pain in my chest and the first time I thought I was having a heart attack. Other than foods and sugary drinks, supplements such as Curcumin and 5-htp can cause this as well.Slippery Elm tincture can be found at places like Whole Foods and the Vitamin Shoppe and works within a few minutes to calm the entire digestive tract. I personally like Nature’s Answer brand. If in doubt go to the closest walk in clinic, er, or dial 911. It’s better to be safe than sorry in this situation.I’m unsure if antacids can mask heart attack symptoms and delay treatment. This would be a question for a doctor.*I am not a doctor*

Can a Hiatal Hernia cause this much pain?

I have had this awful pain under my left ribs for a couple of years. My stomach is always gassy and painful. I had chest pain and bronchitis and went for a chest xray and they said I have a hiatal hernia there. I see the surgeon Thursday. I am in so much discomfort. It burns and aches all the way around my back. I also haved this terrible chest pain in the center of my chest between my breasts. When I lye down if hurts to turn and feels like a train is on my back.....so some people say hiatal hernias don't hurt. The ER doctor said people live with them. Also 4 years afo when I was having a miscarriage this same pain was killing me, but doctors always blew me off about it . Does anyone have any experience like this?

Can smoking marijuana help with the symptoms of a hiatal hernia? Will it help subside the sick feeling in my stomach or the pain I feel? Can it help me actually be able to eat without the urge to vomit?

Okay for starters Cannabis has two possibilities when we are talking about eating, one is the munchies and here’s the chemical reasons why: and what chemical is involved in causing the “munchies”: Why Cannabis Causes The Munchies - CAT Scientific Laboratory Equipment and it can also help with weight loss, and that’s a bit more complicated, because no one is exactly sure why, but it can. So enough about the jokes of the munchies. I found that strains for ME anyway, if they didn’t control my pain caused me to be hungry. The strains that actually help with pain reduction do/did just the opposite.Cannabis and Hernias: I couldn’t preview this because the font is too light, but it seems from my preview like a ‘reasonable’ article talking about cannabis and GERD issues, including Hiatal Hernias. Now, why not take prilosec and all the other pills? It took me 2 years to wean off of this mess I had been on for 20 years. 20 years! Now I may be facing Osteoporosis, dementia (some may argue I am already there)…., and perhaps KIDNEY FAILURE. So how again is a pill better, especially since I wasn’t warned about all this? Want to know another side effect to Priolec, Nexium? GASTRITIS!! So a good portion of why i am taking this mess was actually causing worse bowel problems, worse stomach pain and worse issues with reflux. Really? A better Idea?

Why is it bad to lay down if you are having a heart attack?

I don't know where you heard that but it is incorrect. 2 reasons for laying down if a heart attack is suspected. 1) Laying down will take the strain off of the heart by trying to overcome gravity in returning blood to the heart. If you have every taken your blood pressure while standing it will be different than laying down (otherwise known as orthostatic blood pressure). This is because the heart needs to work harder to overcome the force of gravity pulling the blood down. This is also why we get lightheaded if we stand up too quickly. 2) Safety. If one is truly having a heart attack they will eventually loose consciousness and fall. I have look after many patients in the ER and ICU that have other injuries from falling while having a heart attach. What makes this worse is that these patients usually have a known cardiac history and are on blood thinners to help prevent stroke and heart attacks. Therefore the injuries that they can sustain can be severe to life threatening because of bleeding. I hope this clarifies things for you.

Has anyone ever had a hiatal hernia?

If I were you I would get a referral to Gastroenterologist. He can diagnose which you have quickly. Here's how each is diagnosed.

Hiatal hernias are diagnosed incidentally when an upper gastrointestinal x–ray or endoscopy is done during testing to determine the cause of upper gastrointestinal symptoms such as upper abdominal pain. On both the x–ray and endoscopy, the hiatal hernia appears as a separate "sac" lying between what is clearly the esophagus and what is clearly the stomach. This sac is delineated by the lower esophageal sphincter above and the diaphragm below. The hernia may only be visible during swallows, however.

To diagnose an ulcer, your doctor will order one of the following tests:

An upper GI -- a series of x-rays taken after you drink a substance called barium.
An esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) -- a special test performed by a gastroenterologist in which a thin tube is inserted through your mouth into the gastrointestinal tract to look at your stomach and small intestines

Symptoms of Peptic Ulcer:
A burning pain in the gut is the most common symptom. The pain

feels like a dull ache

comes and goes for a few days or weeks

starts 2 to 3 hours after a meal

comes in the middle of the night when your stomach is empty

usually goes away after you eat

Other symptoms are

losing weight

not feeling like eating

having pain while eating

feeling sick to your stomach

vomiting

Symptoms of Hiatal Hernia:

heartburn
regurgitation
nausea
*If more complicated, symptoms can resemble those of Reflux or GERD

Symptoms of both seem similar, see the Gastroenterologist & get tested to get the correct diagnose. Hope this helps!
