What Is This Vintage Japanese Wooden Box Called

What is this vintage Japanese wooden box called?

Okay. So I have this Japanese wooden box, that I found in a thrift store, and I bought is because I was curious about what it is, but I have searched the internet and I cannot find anything like it. Now normally I would say it was a jewelry box, or tea container, or maybe even a makeup box, except for one peculiarity: inside the wooden box is a pillar with a compartment on the top. Its hard to describe so I am attaching a picture of the inside of the box. The inside compartment has a little wooden lid (not included in picture), and the main box also has a decorated wooden lid (not included in picture), the inside compartment isn't removable. If you know what it is please reply!

What era would a wooden music box with a satin top picture be from?

The first place I would start is identifying what period the picture is from. Different periods had different things and styles that were particularly in fashion. A good look through a book on decoration should be able to help. The second place is to work out what the box and the picture are made from, and also how it is made. Hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood tend to be a bit older. Pine that looks like pine is newer, although older pieces were stained and polished to look much older.Thirdly the picture itself, if it is an inlay with the picture being made of small bits of different coloured woods it would be older. Veneers became popular after ww1 and painting with different varnishes are more contemporary, although again they were known in earlier periods. The first place I would start is on the picture itself.Google a few images and see what you find

Why didn't the Chinese and Koreans adopt wide-spread use of firearms/muskets as readily and quickly as the Japanese did (i.e. like with the  Tanegashima)?

I don’t really see what this question is getting at. In their only encounter after the adoption of primitive firearms, the Imjin war, there were no significant differences in firearm technology between the Ming forces and the Japanese forces. The most you could say is that their firearm development went in different directions. The Japanese were mostly known for their musketry. Their muskets were introduced from the West, of high quality, and their musketeers were well trained. The Ming also had musket, but they were seen as not as competent. The reasons for this are not technological inferiority, but the following:In pre-modern ages, it is natural in the management of a big country such as Ming that things are bound to be untidy. Remember that Ming had literally millions of soldiers, recruited from different sources in different contexts. As a result only some would be armed with muskets, while others would only have extremely primitive firearms. The Ming muskets are notorious for its unsatisfactory manufacture quality. In Qi Ji Guang’s (a famous Ming general) manual, it was said that soldiers were afraid of aiming, because the muskets may easily blow up.For these reasons the Ming military tended to rely less on muskets, but more on another type of firearm that they called the Fulangji—a type of breech loading guns, also from the West, that are usually small and can be carried around easily by a few persons, unlike contemporaneous Western cannons that needed horses to drag. They also fire much faster, but their firepower obviously can’t be compared to cannons. They can be seen as ancient heavy machine guns—in the West these types of gun are most often used on ships and fortresses. Anyways, it was recorded that in the siege of Pyongyang a Ming army of around 40000 men brought more than 70000 firearms of all types (possibly an exaggeration) under the walls of Pyongyang, and the Japanese, who were deficient in artillery, could barely retaliate to their fire.

Why did they use ceramic pillows in Ancient China and as recently as the Ming Dynasty?

The picture above is the porcelain pillow of ancient China.Porcelain pillow originated from the sui dynasty, it’s began mass production during the tang dynasty, and from the Song Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty reached its peak. In the Ming and qing dynasties, the porcelain pillow began to disappear due to the presence of better materials for making pillows. Now Review of history many people will wonder why the ancients slept on the porcelain pillows. Won't it be hard and uncomfortable? According to the historical data the reasons for the user of porcelain pillows in ancient China can be summarized as the following three points.First, the porcelain pillow has the effect to remind the ancient students to study diligently. Some porcelain pillows are designed to be relatively round, so that once the ancient students fell asleep will wake up because the head deviates from the pillow. And there are many mottos on the porcelain pillow that encourage the ancient students to study hard. When the students see it before they go to sleep, they will work harder and harder. Two, the porcelain pillow has the effect of removing the heat of summer . In ancient times there were not air conditioners and electric fans in the summer so that It is difficult to fall asleep. But porcelain pillow because of its texture has the effect of removing the heat of summer so that it could help people to fall asleep well.Three.,the porcelain pillow has the auspicious meaning. Many ancients wrote some of the blessings and painted the auspicious beasts on the porcelain pillow as gifts between relatives and friends.Talk with Beautiful porcelain world you can kow more about porcelain pillow.
