What is your favorite boy and/or girl name and their meaning?

My favourite first-middle name combos:Girl: Elodie OswinElodie means ‘foreign riches’ (also similar to melody, linking to music), and Oswin means ‘God’s friend’ (traditionally a boys name, but sounds really cute for a girl. I’m also a Doctor Who fan so it pays a little homage to Clara Oswin Oswald)Boy: Théo AurelienThéo, coming from Theodore, means ‘divine gift’, and Aurelien means ‘golden one’.As you may have noticed, I also love French names, and my family originates from France, and I would love to raise my children bilingual too.

What do you think of my favourite boy names (NEW)?

Loving the name Everett Schuyler John for its uniqueness and as soon as I saw it, it stuck out to me. Love the more masculine spelling of Schuyler (b/c I have a female cousin named Skyler Rose).

I'm also really loving the names Henry Lucian Thomas as it seems like a very charming name and I also like Edmund Zachary James, Leo Sebastian August, and Jude Caspar Elliot.

I am not liking the names Hugo Adrien Mathias and Enzo Christopher Gabriel. The reason is because for Hugo, I see it as a name for a child that will be teased all throughout high school (even though I love Hugo from the tv show Lost) and Enzo just may be a little too unique for my taste.

With Alexander Matteo Charles, the name just doesn't pop out to me and there's nothing special about it. With all the other names, there is a unique sense to them and there are so many Alexander's in the world. What about trying Matteo Alexander Charles instead?

Also with Maximilian Arthur Louis, I do like the name and the twist on the simple name of Max, but the name is quite a mouthful. (lol)

Everett Schuyler John- 10/10
Alexander Matteo Charles- 4/10
Leo Sebastian August-7/10
Jude Caspar Elliot- 8/10
Enzo Christopher Gabriel- 5/10
Henry Lucian Thomas- 9/10
Maximilian Arthur Louis- 7/10
Edmund Zachary James- 8/10
Hugo Adrien Mathias- 4/10

Is Phuong Thanh a girl's name or a boy's name?

Interesting question. "Phuong" itself can be a girl's or a boy's name. "Thanh" can also be a boy's or a girl's name. However "Phuong Thanh" is most likely a girl's name. Isn't the Vietnamese language/name strange? :-)

In this case many Vietname folks would associate this name with a contemporary famous female singer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phuong_Than... so I'd say your professor is a lady.

How ok is it to give girl names to boys in Japan?

I have never seen 子 in a boy's name and I imagine this would be as strange as giving a boy a name that ended in -ella in English.Traditional Japanese names seem pretty gendered, it's hard to explain, but even as a non-native speaker you pick up on it. Yoshihiro, Masanobu and Takashi are definitely guys, and Akiko, Chizuru and Hana are definitely girls. In this case, the guys tend to have two character names where at least one of the characters is a virtue "ambitious" "righteous", "happy", and the other is something like "high" or "vast". Alternately, a lot of sons just used to be named literally First Son, Second Son, etcThe girls have elegant names like Autumn-child, Thousand-cranes and Flower.Recently, the trend of unique names has hit Japan just as hard as the rest of the world, and many parents are coining new combinations of kanji for their children. For example, spelling the name Sakura phonetically as 沙久良 or something. The more cringe-worthy of these names are known in Japan as kirakira neemu, or "sparklenames".Anyway, as a result of these Sparklenames, you can occasionally see boys with more traditionally feminine characters in their names, or vice versa. However, in this case, the characters usually spell out a name that is clearly the appropriate gender. This trend may be exaggerated in anime if part of the plot involves a character having a clearly eyebrow-raising name for their gender, or the character is meant to be a particularly effeminate man or tomboyish girl. But mostly, even among the Sparklenames boys seem to have names like "soaring dragon" and "shining light" and girls are "beautiful sunrise" and "future hope"

Is 理明 a suitable name for a girl?

理明 is a unisexual name in China. It is readily accepted as both a boy's and girl's name. So, it could work. The 理 here is actually in the 3rd tone. So, if you are looking for something with the 2nd tone, which I believe does sound more feminine, try 黎明, which means dawn in Mandarin.
