What Is Your Favorite Greeting Card Manufacturer And Why

Is it tacky to make your own greeting card?

Making a card is actually wonderful! They can be keepsakes for those who receive and appreciate them. They show creativity and care. One year while Hubster and I were in Yosemite, I made a snowman. I photographed it in black and white with my Minolta 35mm film camera. I developed the film then made 15 prints of the snowman. I bought good quality black card stock with raw edges. I glued the snowman photo on the front with an acid-free spray adhesive. I had natural colored card stock slightly smaller than the black that I used as the inside (used the spray adhesive for the section on the right side to hold it in place, but leaving the left side free). Next, I punched a few small holes along the spine and inserted strands of very thin satin ribbon in a deep burgundy. I wrote notes on the inside with a black caligraphy pen.It is my most favorite Christmas card that I have ever sent out. I had kept one for myself for many years, but I sent it to someone a couple of years ago. Most people that I sent it to kept it.

How do you make your own greeting cards out of old paper?

What a lovely idea! My walls are filled with beautiful cards made by my friends. It’s a gift that they can cherish for a long time, and they’ll think of you whenever they see it.If you intend to mail the cards, go to a paper or stationery story and get envelopes you like. Do this first, before you cut the paper, so you know what size you’ll be working with. Then decide how you want the card to look. Do you want words inside? An old poem written out by hand is often a good enclosure, or a historic quote that has meaning for you. Once you know what you want to say, you can either write it directly on the old paper, or write it on clean new paper and use the old paper as decoration.Think about what else you want to use on the card. Pressed flowers are nice, as is ribbon or lace. I even have one with small flat stones glued on the front. Anything that will fit inside the envelope you chose. If you use glue, make sure it’s fully dry. That’s an important detail which is often overlooked. I accidentally destroyed one card because my friend put it in the envelope before the glue was dry and the whole thing stuck together.Be creative, let your imagination run free and have fun with it!

What do you mean by greeting cards?

Assuming the questioner is totally unfamiliar with the concept of a greeting card:There are two kinds: physical and electronic. The physical card is a piece of paper, usually high quality(1), usually folded, that contains a message of congratulations, friendship, support, or something else positive. Often this celebrates a personal milestone like a birthday or graduation, or a holiday like Christmas or Mother’s Day. It could also be an expression of thanks or an an expression of sympathy for someone who is ill or bereaved. The cover almost always has a picture and a few words, and there's a message on the inside. Sometimes the sender writes a personal message on the inside as well. Here's a random example (image from Greetings Island: Birthday Cards)It has the same function as a personal note, and it's often seen as impersonal if the sender just signs it and sends it without adding a note. The commercial greeting cards are getting fancier and more expensive; some of them come with sound. The electronic card also has a picture and message and is sent through email from a site like Blue Mountain. Very convenient if you forgot the occasion and need to send a card at the last minute.(1) It doesn't have to be high quality paper if it's homemade like this one:Image from Flowers Birthday Card Craft

During which holiday are the most greeting cards in the U.S. sold?

Christmas may be the only major December holiday to make the list, but it takes the top spot in a huge way. In fact, with around 1.5 billion cards purchased each year, more Christmas cards are sent each year than every other holiday on the list combined – a lot more. Christmas cards account for around 60 percent of all holiday card sales each year. It's no surprise considering, along with individuals and families, many businesses take part as well – business Christmas cards are a very popular way for companies to send annual thank yous to clients, customers and employees.

How do you break into the greeting card business?

It depends on what exactly you have in mind. If you are a designer, you can get in touch with card dealers who take care of the publicity aspect by uploading them on their website. You get paid when the designs are accepted and purchased. Get in touch at Greeting card universe. Another option is to create an exclusive brand and sell them on online shopping platforms. But please do remember that it is an incredibly competitive market with a large number of registered and unregistered designers. I want to break into the greeting card business. Where can I find a manufacturer that will print my greeting cards at a low price?

There would be a number of printers who would want to collaborate with you on this project.  Depending on the Volume and intricacies in your designs, you should look for an offset or digital printer online in the region where you want to distribute your cards.  Some of them might be willing to take a stake in the royalties and do this if they see the business potential.Make a simple, but credible business plan that shows clearly how you will generate the revenue, talk to a handful of printers, go with the one or two with whom you are comfortable, work out the legal and commercial formalities and then go for it together!

Is anyone innovating in the greeting cards space?

Innovation in the greeting card space is quite different than most of the other segments. Greeting cards are meant to bring smiles onto faces that matter to you. Over here, buyers are not the recipients, but they are the ones who decide what might please the recipient. That indicates the challenging part. Its not one iPhone that will woo millions of users rather there could be millions of greetings for millions of people. Every card can be unique. No buyer would like to send the same card twice to the same recipient. She/He would definitely look for a different card. At end of the day, if a greeting card can bring the much desired smile, it has done its job. I have seen people decorating their cubes with hand-drawn greeting cards by kids and they flaunt it too. Reason, they love it and they acknowledge someone has taken time to make it for them. And there comes the connect. For the sake of greetings, there are millions of formal greeting cards distributed to employees every year but how many of them actually find a place at employee’s desk? Since, there is nothing that could have made the employees happy and connected, It becomes more of a branding material advertising the company. Moreover, greeting card is always a surprise for the recipient. Lot many companies are working on how to make this surprise a happy one and as a result we see cute personalisation techniques being introduced over different mediums.Innovation has been happening in greeting cards since inception and would continue till the time they exist. Though there’s no formulae that is perfect for everyone. Actually greeting cards is one of those unique segments that just have one objective - make the recipient happy. No standards, no limitations. Whatever you can think, whatever you feel if your imagination can earn that smile, the job is done. Most of the time the imagination part is left to the greeting card companies that facilitate the job for the buyers. P.S. : I am the founder at  http://www.mangotwins.com, an online greeting cards store founded with the same simple objective of sharing smiles and cheers.
