What Is Your Favorite Take Away

What is your favorite takeaway?

In The Netherlands we have quite a few Surinam restaurants, and that, believe me, is a blessing. I see myself as quite a good cook, but I won't try to make the Surinam Roti. Oh, it is so good, I'm getting hungry while typing this answers.Roti is a flat bread, introduced in the Surinam cuisine by Indian immigrants, sort of unsweetened pancake, similar to the chapati. In Surinam restaurants it's made with potato, cumin, and chili peppers. This is the main thing, and you eat it with (optional spicy) chicken or lamb, “asparagus beans”, potato, hard boiled egg, onion and garlic. You eat it with your hands, tearing of a piece of the roti, and scooping up the rest of the ingredients. You can make it extra spicy, and/or add “sour”, a little cup filled with, euh, I'm not sure what :D, and maybe some pickled cucumber.I know, that's awesome. Try it sometime.

What’s your favorite Mexican take away dish?

Tacos de lengua, when available. A chile relleno burrito with rice and cheese is also very nice. But if you see a grandmother selling tamales from a big pot camped out in the front of a panaderia don’t pass those up. Almost always excellent plus you are helping her to support herself

What rule would you add or take away from your favorite sport?

It isn’t my favorite sport, but the worst rule I can think of right now is the touchback rule in (US) football. The touchback rule I’m talking about is when a player fumbles the ball near the end zone and the ball enters the end zone before going out of bounds.According to this rule, the team on offense not only doesn’t get a point, but loses the ball! And does the opposing team get the ball at the one yard line? NOOO! It gets the ball at its own 20!Think about it: if the player fumbled and the ball went out of bounds at the one yard line, his team keeps possession. But if the ball travels one yard farther (i.e., closer to a touchdown), does his team benefit from getting closer? NOOOO! The team gets screwed!!How is this rule at all fair? The defense didn’t recover the ball — it went out of bounds! Ridiculous!!!!!I propose changing this rule as follows:Offensive team keeps the ball if the ball is fumbled out of bounds in the end zoneThe team is assessed a modest penalty of five yards (let’s say for delay of game) from the prior line of scrimmageThe down is reset, like most other penaltiesThe NFL, not known for making rational decisions, needs to get this one right.

Would you ever take away your dog’s favorite toy if they were tearing up the house with it?

Oh YES. My female GSD is a toy destroyer, and in her single-minded path to total destruction, she’s been know to take out furniture, people, cats, nearly a fish tank, and a stereo. We won’t mention the coffee she’s spilled from bumping tables. At 8 years old tomorrow (February 9, 2019 - for future readers), she still thinks boxes are the “bomb” for “hiding” her toys - she drops them in, then takes them out, then drops them in and barks at us like we’re supposed to get it for her now. Then goes back to her game. She tosses ropes, stuffed toys, and balls at people to get them to play. She also squeaks her tennis balls almost as fast as my Rottie did her soccer ball (which is to say so quickly it’s almost one long noise). Those get taken the most quickly, and are for outside play and recall work. Her toys get hidden when she’s so wound up the glass in the display case rattles from her leaping to catch whatever toy she’s using (she also knows the difference between her cows - three of them; her owl, her various balls, and her “thing” - Kong toy), whether we’re playing with her or she’s self-entertaining.Besides, do you really want to allow your pet to trash your house? You don’t let your kids do it, so why allow the dog?

What is your favorite take-out food?

This is a what was my favorite take-out food tale.I once worked near a row of restaurants and on administrative days frequently ate a take-out lunch to save time. I also enjoyed trying different things.I liked the Thai place very much but the stand-out was a Greek restaurant. I’ve always enjoyed Greek food, having worked around it quite a bit. I like strong flavors and Greek food delivers. This place was not…a fast food joint but rather a little gem, complete with white tablecloths. On the other hand, they were not expensive and always very happy to make take-out orders and the “appetizer” menu was affordable, quick, and robust. Why apps? The appetizers were like a meal for two, and they were delicious. The place were chef-driven and very well run. They had a little trick behind that menu: they marinated foods heavily and let them sit, lending them flavor that no one could ‘just go home and make.’ I suspect that this also gave a long lifetime to the pre-assembled dishes. It was delicious.Outstanding items that I recall were the Greek Salad…sound cliched? I’m not a lover of salads in general, but this was free of any lettuce, containing tomatoes, cucumber, red onion, Feta cheese and lots of Kalamata olives, all marinated in a very strong lemon, olive oil and oregano marinade. They also had an assortment of fine dips, served in threes with pita bread, all house made and marvelously strong.I’ve always liked Gyros very much and theirs were outstanding, made with thin, solid, heavily marinated pieces of…pork, I found out, when I asked. It tasted just like Greek lamb…with all the proper trimmings on the gyro, all house made, even the hot, fluffy pita. I believe that there was a beef option, as well as vegetarian but I was quite happy with the pork.I wish I could have some of that salad right now.
