What is your favorite philosophical quote you live by?

I live by a complete philosophy (Stoicism), not a collection of quotes, but I do keep one quote in mind which is, in effect, a brief summary of Stoicism:Thy present opinion founded on understanding, and thy present conduct directed to social good, and thy present disposition of contentment with everything which happens: that is enough.-Marcus Aurelius, Meditations(Meaning: consider the true nature of all things, rather than what they merely appear to be, in order to inform your opinion; act justly and in the interests of society; do not be troubled by that which you cannot control.)It doesn’t capture the precise details and can be misinterpreted, but it gets the general idea across and it’s a good reminder for someone well-versed in the philosophy.

What is your favourite quote? Why?

My favourites(1) Fight Club - "You're not your job. You're not how much money you have in the bank. You're not the car you drive. You're not the contents of your wallet. You're not your fucking khakis. You're the all-singing, all-dancing crap of the world"(2) Fight Club - "Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy shit we don't need. We're the middle children of history. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War is a spiritual war. Our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very pissed off."(3) Anonymous - "Go to work. Get married. Have some kids. Pay your taxes. Pay your bills. Watch your TV. Follow fashion. Act normal. Obey the law. And repeat after me - I AM FREE"(4) Eminem - "You got enemies? Good. That means you stood up for something in your life"(5) V for Vendetta - "Beneath this mask, there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask, there is an idea, Mr. Creedy and ideas are bulletproof"(6) Bob Marley - "You can fool some people sometimes but you can't fool all the people all the time"

Which is your favourite Calvin and Hobbes quote/strip?

Sometimes I feel like our life has gotten too complicated… That we’ve accumulated more than we really need… That we’ve accepted too many demands…Well, Thoreau says, “Simplify, simplify.” Maybe we need to do that. But how?Every time I read this strip, I interpret it differently. To me, Calvin’s parents’ concerns are genuine and rational. In this day and age with our appliances and devices, we often get spoiled and feel entitled to everything. Therefore, it is often necessary to “simplify, simplify”, and get rid of some possessions and burdens.Instead of trying to cram in some extra hours at work, it is necessary to take that time to instead meditate, relax, and do nothing.Thoreau’s Walden, the book in which the quotation is found, centers around a man trying to simplify his life and live alone by Walden pond.Despite his contradictions, I believe Walden highlights the main ideologies in Calvin and Hobbes— to relax, take the time to do nothing, and spend more time in nature. The allusion opened the door to philosophy to me.After reading the strip, I was fascinated by the ideals of philosophers and writers like Thoreau.I began to read works of philosophers like Nietzsche and Locke. And my diverse knowledge in philosophy can all be credited to this Calvin and Hobbes strip. In addition to the philosophical undertones of the strip, it is also one of the funniest strips to me.The use of situational irony, and the expressions on Calvin’s parents’ faces when they look at him is pure gold. The fact that both Calvin’s mom and dad first thought of Calvin when considering “simplifying” is unsettling yet amusing, and I can only imagine what they were thinking of doing with Calvin.Watterson’s ability to capture comical expressions is amazing, and this skill was very well put to use.To top that off, Calvin’s comment that:I hate it when they look at me that way.All of these elements make this my favorite Calvin and Hobbes strip:Philosophy, irony, and humor.
