What Kind Of Conversations Do You Have

. What kind of person do you have to be to profit from a conversation with Socrates?

A dead one.

How can you get into deep conversation with a girl?

Share something about yourself...something personal. Like a past experience or a feeling. I dunno. But when a guy opens up to a girl, its a HUGE thing, so we're usually more than forth-coming with how we feel once we realize that you put yourself out there. Doing this shows that you have confidence, and that you trust her. Just make sure whatever you share with her isn't something crude or grotesque and it should work in your favor.

Do you have conversations in your head with other people e.g. your friends?

Nearly everyone does this in some form or another, and for all kinds of reasons. One reason might be to "rehearse" a conversation that we expect to have in the future, and this kind of imaginary conversation is sometimes used as a therapeutic technique in counseling (so you're far from psycho!). As a therapist, I sometimes help the client rehearse what he/she wants to say to make sure the message will come across as intended, or help the client imagine possible responses to what he/she wants to say, etc.

Another reason to have these sorts of imaginary conversations is to "redo" situations from the past that didn't turn out the way we would have liked. I think everyone has had the experience of thinking of the right thing to say *after* the conversation is over. The French call this "l'esprit d'escalier" - the spirit on the stairs - in other words, the little voice in your head that says exactly what you should have said as you descend the stairs away from the place where the conversation happened. These sorts of imaginary conversations can be good if they help us to cope better with similar situations in the future, but replaying such conversations over and over can also keep us too focused on the wrongs done to us by others and lead to chronic resentment and anger.

And sometimes we just have these imaginary conversations because they make us feel good. Say you play football and your team has a big match coming up. You might imagine being at a party afterward and talking to all the people who are congratulating you on the big win. It feels good to imagine this and that's great - it might even motivate you to go out and play better.

So don't worry - you're definitely not crazy and the conversations you have in your head can often actually be helpful to you.
