What Kind Of Jobs Are Available For Health Psychologists

How do psychologists find jobs?

Psychologists find work the same way everyone does - by monitoring the relevant job listings in the media - published and online. Most psychology graduates are in the lucky position of having a degree that is both numerate (all those statistics classes) and literate (essays, lab reports), so they can apply for almost any ‘general’ graduate job - management, advertising, etc., etc.Working in the field of psychology usually requires postgraduate study, at either Masters or PhD level: when I graduated it was normal for clinical psychologists to have substantial, often unpaid work experience, topped off with a Masters degree; nowadays, an in-service PhD is more usual. For research, a PhD is expected. In some fields, such as organisational psychology, a Masters is enough. Jobs in these areas are more likely to be advertised in major newspapers (e.g., Times Higher Educational Supplement for research), or in-house publications (NHS Jobs bulletins for clinical psychology). As you can probably tell, many of these publications are online nowadays too - not just in print.

Are there a lot of jobs open for psychologists?

From my perspective in the US it seems that there are fewer jobs for psychologists (PhD in Psychology), largely because well trained people with lesser degrees (Master's degrees in Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy, Counseling) are being hired to do many of these jobs.  However there are still jobs available.

What jobs are available for people who study applied psychology?

I am not sure what the difference is between Psychology and Applied Psychology, but generally, a psychology degree can open many doors. You can work in advertising, data analysis or work as an assistant psychologist, become a mental health nurse or a social worker. If you are good at art, you can become an art therapist.

Explain how health psychology is union between medicine and psychology?

In the 1950s, psychology and medicine began to notice a new trend. Life expectancy was up because people were less likely to die of contagious diseases. However, medical problems due to lifestyle choices were on the rise. Obesity leading to heart disease and Type II diabetes. Smoking leading to heart disease and cancer. And so on..... So, according to the biopsychosocial model, providers now need to examine all aspects of a patient's life. The medical physicians treat the symptoms. It is the psychologists job to identify the behavioral, affective, and social contributors to disease. Does someone smoke because it is classicially conditioned? Is hypertension caused by a stress job? The psychologist then has to design interventions to address the behavioral, affective, and social issues that cause and maintain these diseases.

What kind of psychologists work with criminals (serial killers)?

Mental health counselors and psychologists do work in prisons.
Prisons do not employ lawyers other than in a capacity as any business would.
It is hard to work with serial killers because unlike on TV there are really not that many, either in custody or out on in the world.

I have a family member who is a psychiatric counselor and whose whole practice is with serial sexual offenders who are on parole.

I have a friend who is a clinical psychologist whose part-time retirement jobs are working in both a Federal and state prison.
Mostly does evaluations
