Why is scientific computing not particularly "fashionable"?
I've always gotten the opposite impression, that scientific computing is actually quite fashionable. When you see Tony Stark simulating elemental physics in his computers in the Hollywood films, that's scientific computing. When you think of supercomputers or racks of GPUs, they're probably crunching numbers for folding proteins or simulating gigantic neural networks - that's scientific computing.Scientific computing pervades all aspects of basic research nowadays, from the smallest experiments to the biggest datasets. Science is often a precursor to new technology and innovation (the exception being innovation that does not require novel scientific findings, like product design).Scientific computing is ubiquitous within the tech industry and commands a great deal of respect even within engineering teams because it often necessitates a background in the sciences (in addition to engineering) and is mathematically rigorous. I think this futuristic-type stuff is always fashionable, if anything.
