Why is an angel such a popular Christmas tree topper?

The angel is not “a symbol of purity” as some have answered here, but a messenger of God. The word angel just means “messenger”. Let’s put it in context.Christmas trees have a pre-Christian origin and were adopted for Christian use by Christian leaders such as Boniface and Martin Luther. They were popular in Germany before they were taken up as part of the family Christmas in the the US and the UK in the nineteenth century. The whole Christmas tree thing is a long story and we haven’t got space for it all here. The Christmas tree as a Christian symbol has long been used to share the message of the Christian good news. The lights, previously candles, on the tree were there to symbolise Jesus the Light of the World being born.On top of the tree it became the tradition to put one of the two heralds of the Christmas message. One of the these was the Star of Bethlehem that told the Wise Men that a baby had been born King of the Jews. Many Christmas trees have a star on the top for this reason. The other sign that pointed towards Christmas was the angel - the angels that visited Mary and then Joseph, and mostly the angels that came to the Bethlehem shepherds to tell them that a special baby had been born in Bethlehem. So the angel, along with the star, the signposts to the Christmas good news, became the symbol at the very top of the decorated Christmas tree. Some people have taken to calling the angel a “fairy”, which is a very different creature from mythology, nothing to do with Christmas. The questioner is right in identifying the tree topper as the Christmas angel who announces the birth of the Christ-child.

On your Christmas tree, do you have a star or an angel? Why?

A star. The tree itself to me is a pagan symbol of the evergreen and a spring that will return along with the light after the winter solstice.I like to decorate my tree in a ‘themed’ way with all the decs one or at most two colours. This year it was mostly white and silver with a few touches of gold but I also have sets of red/gold and blue/green decs and planning to add to the gold decs next Christmas and do an all gold tree. That is apart from a couple of little bits I have bought over the years - a fat felt robin and a Disney ‘Tigger’ character and are always somewhere on the tree. The star itself is very fragile shell and metal ‘capiz’ style and I bought it at a Christmas market many years ago, I think when I was working in Germany. It’s actually not a ‘pentacle’ star which it really should be for a pagan!

Tree Toppers - Star or Angel?

We put an angel on top of our tree. I don't really mind putting a star on top of the tree (in fact, up until a few years ago we always put a star atop our tree); however, a few years ago we found the most beautiful angel tree topper, and so we now use that.

Best wishes!

What is the most popular Christmas tree topper?

I'd say an angel was the most popular, with a star being very close second.

Do you think using an angel or a star on top of your Christmas tree is wrong if you are not very religious?

Thanks for your question, Tara.Despite its name, the Christmas tree is not a religious symbol, it’s just the support for any kind of ornaments and lights to make your home more joyful. And the star is not a religious symbol as well, so if you feel hesitant using religious symbols please use it and be happy!BUTAny religious symbol, in my opinion, should be able to be used at any time and in any place if I do not lack respect, and during a joyous event that should not happen ... (I hope so).If I would adorn a Christmas tree again I probably would look for symbols of Christianity, Islam, Judaism and Buddhism and would put them together meaning my wish of peace.BTW, if you have joung kids then please put one or more angels also on the tree. Kids love angels and fairys :-)

Why do all Christmas tree top angels have blonde hair?

They don't. It might simply be where you are shopping but I understand that they don't for mine is a brunette.A guardian angel is an angel that is assigned to protect and guide a particular person, group, kingdom, or country. Belief in guardian angels can be traced throughout all antiquity. Sometimes they'll get in contact with you but most of the time they guide as an unseen hand.If you want some help discovering your guardian angel (or angels - you might have more than one) try this: Discover YOUR Guardian AngelIt will appear as however, proportionally compared to the basic population, there are MANY more blondies in the angel world than in genuine life. This might be due to the fact that consistently, angels are illustrated as white, blonde, blue eyed, holy things. However, if this held true, then about 99% of the world would not become an angel after death.

What goes on the top of a Christmas tree, a fairy or an angel?

In my 70 years of experience, I have not encountered a rule about what goes on top of the tree. My family used an angel or two or three over the years. I think I saw angels, stars, spiral tops, fancy lighting , snowflakes, huge bows made of ribbon and sometimes nothing.Someone on Quora may know about a tradition or long standing reason for one or the other. I don’t think it is important to most people which or what goes on top, other than carrying on traditions that are important to them. I most often make a huge bow with wired ribbon that unites my decorations. I have used angels and stars and other things that I cannot remember.I have been collecting ornaments for a very long time. I have many, many ornaments from delicate blown glass to cheap little snowmen. I gave my children ornaments each year that reflected their interest at the time, and now as adults they have their own collections of Barbie dolls, ballerinas, foot balls, trains, cars, angels, Santas, reindeer, Strawberry shortcake, Star Wars characters, dogs, birds, movie characters, team symbols, silly bobbles and many others. I am a dog lover, so I have one tree that I used only dog ornaments.Good luck in finding THE answer to your question.

What can you put on top of your Christmas tree besides the traditional star or angel?

We put a santa hat on top of ours. It's really cute!!!
