However, since she and Stabler have begun to falter in their police work (neither is willing to risk the other's life in order to catch the killer), Benson asks for a new partner. Benson briefly transfers into the computer crimes unit, but the first two cases she works on involved SVU. In the episode "Web," Benson returns to SVU as Stabler's partner.

What are some Law and Order: SVU episodes based on true events?
I do not have a t.v. anymore but relying on memory I thought it was made clear the episodes are inspired on true events. There was one I remember very clearly that was so realistic I sat there so caught up in it that even though what had really happened was somewhat different, the artistic license could be forgiven. Younger viewers may have heard of the Kojak series the initial episode of which was a movie (The Marcus-Nelson Murders) devoted to a re-telling of the Career Girls killing on the upper East Side of Manhattan on August 28, 1963. A fellow by the name of Whitmore was wrongfully convicted and it wasn’t until years later that the real killer, Richard Robles, was arrested, convicted and sentenced. Fifty some odd years later, he is still in an upstate maximum security prison. So, to answer your question, a great many such cases (Special Victims is the newer appelation used. Cases back then were assigned to precinct detective squads or area homicide) are inspired by real-life events.
