What Makes A Movie A

What makes a movie good?

This list is definitely not universal, but these elements are the ones that I sometimes think about after watching a film, especially if I liked it a lot.An interesting script. To achieve this, there has to be a suspense, a twist or excitement of any kind. However, the story should be basically simple, focused on one main event, one character, one relationship between characters or one idea. If there are too many things put inside a single film, the viewers will lose interest.Originality. This one also applies to the script. It is getting more difficult to come up with a good story that is worth telling and that hasn't been already put on screen. That's why there are so many remakes and sequels. But, the best movies are usually original and fresh.Being true-to-life. This can't be applied to all film genres, but those films that want to be considered realistic, have to resemble the real life. They have to be believable or they won't make sense at all.Good structure. It is important that all the scenes are meaningful, relevant to the story or character development and that they are of appropriate length. Repetition should be avoided. A director is the most responsible that all scenes are balanced and that they make a coherent unit.Good acting. When watching a film, viewers should think/should be encouraged to believe that they are watching real-life people. If somebody sticks out for acting strangely or unusual, something is not right with their acting.Characters. All the character's actions should be motivated and believable. The characters should be multi-layered and as complex as possible.Good pacing. Events in the film shouldn't be presented in a way that makes the audience bored (too slow) nor in a way that makes them unable to follow the story and understand the events (too fast).Visual beauty. The quality of a film that makes it look attractive and beautiful. In this respect, colours, contrasts, camera angle, the use of special effects etc. are relevant. Make-up and costumes are also two important visual elements.Sound. All elements (dialogues, monologues, sound effects and music) should be in accordance with the film's theme/genre.Thanks for the A2A.

What makes a movie boring?

hey Marina :)

For me, personal reasons such as pace, ways the director tries to connect with the audience, etc. However, those are personal nitpicky things, and movies such as In The Mood For Love are in no way bad movies, they just bore me. Í will declare a movie boring however, if it has the following elements to it

-Lack of plot, or nothing to substitute for it. There are movies such as Edward Scissorhands, which are really just King Kong in a fairytale concept, yet aren't boring because they are done in a unique way and give the audience characters to empathise with. An example of a boring film in this regards, is probably the last 2 Transformers movies.

-Movies with bad acting and characters. Gotta agree with everyone that's mentioned it, but 2012 suffered massive drag mainly because the lack of characters, and giving pretty good actors such as John Cusack not much to work with, except to conform to stupid character roles

-Movies that stand for nothing, except lame-ish and cliche-d ideas. I understand why alot of people may have found patriotish - driven films a bore- because if a movie stands for nothing, or makes a little or next to no point to make, its hard for an audience to invest in it.

BQ: Oh nice quote! Definately agree with it, although my favourites have changed alot.

My taste in 2002- 2007 (age 7-13)
Bend It Like Beckham, any Hilary Duff film, Revenge Of The Sith, Sound Of Music, Harry Potter

My taste now, my 17year old self- just 5 favourite movies
American History X, Solaris (1972), Memento, Breaking The Waves, The Shawshank Redemption

What Makes A Movie Unique?

Breaking Formula is a big one. Movies have a specific structure to them this is pretty strictly adhered to. For instance, in a romantic comedy, you have the couple that doesn't really like each other, are forced together somehow, and end up figuring out they were meant for each other. We've all seen that countless times.

However, take a movie like 500 Days of Summer, where immediately the guy thinks he's found the woman of his dreams, and they like each other right away but as the film progresses it is realized that they are not meant for one another. That's different.

Also, going with a different narrative structure. Something like Memento, where the story is actually revealed by going backwards. Or how Tarentino likes to tell a story completely out of order.

This last thing that can make a film unique is visual style. Say what you want about Zack Snyder (yes Sucker Punch was atrocious) but when 300 came out, there was nothing else that looked like that. Another good example is Sin City.

What makes a movie a Hollywood movie?

“Hollywood” is a name used to describe the entire U.S. film industry, which started in the Los Angeles, California suburb of Hollywood. So a Hollywood movie would be an American movie. The International Federation of Film Archives defines the country of origin as the "country of the principal offices of the production company or individual by whom the moving image work was made." A Hollywood movie can therefore be further defined as a movie produced by a company or individual whose principal offices are in the United States. The nationality of the film’s writer, director, or cast does not matter, nor do the filming locations. Some people make the distinction between Hollywood films and indie films, which are made outside the major film studio system. So, one could alternatively consider a Hollywood film to be one that is produced and/or financed by one of the six major film studios — 20th Century Fox, Disney, Paramount, Sony, Universal, and Warner Bros — which all have studio lots located in or near Hollywood, California. However, these major studio lots are mainly used for shooting television shows. It may surprise some people that very few Hollywood movie are shot on the movie sound stages actually located in or near Hollywood, California due to the expense of filming there. Many Hollywood movies these days are filmed in other states such as Georgia, Louisiana, or New Mexico instead for purely economic reason. Hollywood films movies are even shot in Canada, Australia, Hungary, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and other foreign countries, even if the film’s story is set in the United States.

What makes a movie a dark comedy?

It is mostly a matter of 3 distinguishing factors:How grave the tragic elements are, to which a degree violence has an impact and what the general attitude is towards tragic incidents. For instance:In ‘Light comedies’ such as old silent movies, you often see characters having accidents without ever getting really hurt. They fall through manholes, slip in a banana and so on. - so here we see that the incidents themselves aren’t grave they seem to survive unharmed and lastly , the characters attitude towards what has happened is never that of pain or grief. In a Dark comedy, the opposite is true. In a movie like Fargo the subject matter is grave; it deals with debt, Kidnapping, homicide, deceit, extreme violence, and much more. In addition to that the characters attitude towards it is that of , Anger, revenge, grief. There is a serious and realistic tone in the overall way, that the tragic elements are portrayed.

What makes a book or movie a classic?

Classics simply means a concept that can travel across time. Considering the instance of a movie if the concept of that movie and the characters in it apply over a period of time but if the same concept holds good in another storeyline in another period of time and in another scenario, that movie becomes a classic. It can also be interpreted as something that creates a long lasting impression on society. We might have seen some movies which is entirely different from the rest, these are created to increse the standards of audience, such phenomenal books and movies which influences our entire thought process and travel decades and centuries are classics. Best wishes
