What does "Bank Holiday Monday" mean?

The term "Bank Holidays" means different things in different parts of the UK

In England and Wales, it means that virtually all businesses (including the banks) are closed. In effect a national holiday.

In Scotland, on most Bank Holidays, only the banks are closed. Scotland has "local holidays" on dates decided by the Local Authorities. These vary from area to area.

Some local holidays are very local. For example, Ayr Gold Cup day is only observed in South Ayrshire, being the Monday following the running of the Ayr Gold Cup at Ayr Racecourse in September. Similarly Lammas Day is only celebrated in South Lanarkshire. It means that days such as Good Friday, Easter Monday and Boxing Day may, or may not, be holidays in Scotland. The only nationally observed local holidays are January 1st, January 2nd, May Day (first Monday in May) and Christmas Day.

The exceptions are Christmas Day, Boxing Day, January 1st and January 2nd.the

Why are bank holidays called bank holidays?

Bank holidays are so called because back in the mid-19th century in the UK it was difficult for bankers to get time off. There’s a good article here on why they exist: http://www.publicholidayguide.co...While most working people had time off on ‘public’ holidays it was difficult for bankers to have a holiday because bills of exchange (money and debts, to you and me) still required repaying whatever day it was. While Sundays were taken as days off, public (national) holidays were no exception. In 1871 the Bank Holidays Act was introduced which designated Easter Monday, Whit Monday, the first Monday in August and Boxing Day.The upshot is that people could not be compelled to do anything on a ‘bank’ holiday that they could not be compelled to do on Christmas Day or Good Friday (common law, nationwide public holidays). As this included making a (business) payment businesses hence closed for the day - and people took the day off. Payments made the following day were deemed to have been made the day before.Bank holidays are slightly different in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

It’s a public holiday. The name comes from the fact that banks do not conduct business on those days. Many businesses and government offices close for bank holidays. Schools are closed, too.But closure is far from universal. Retailers often remain open nowadays, for example, because they can do good business on a bank holiday when many of their customers have a day off work. For the same reason, tourist attractions are often very busy on a bank holiday. Most bank holidays take place on a Monday, in order to form a “long weekend” with the preceding Saturday and Sunday.
