What 3D modelling software do video game companies mostly use?

While I'm morally obligated to plug Maya because I work for Autodesk, it is genuinely great software. It's not the easiest to learn but it's probably the single most powerful animation program in the world. If you can afford it, you're probably going to use it.Our customers make cool stuff3ds Max is also ours. It's more popular for games. I'd say it's better for poly modeling, but Maya wins if you have more complex needs, like plausibly realistic animation or physics simulation or rendered fur--which is why Maya is dominant for motion pictures. Again, great if you can afford it (and with our subscription programs becoming popular, affording things is somewhat more feasible).For detail modeling, used for making normal maps, ZBrush is a great piece of software. That one's not ours. We do have a homegrown variant called Mudbox, but I think ZBrush is more widespread.Another great poly modeler is modo. Also not ours, but they're great software, and a bit cheaper. These programs work together, even though we are competitors--if you make a model in modo, it's possible to export it to Maya for animation and then import normal maps from ZBrush or Mudbox for detailing. Then you import your textures from Photoshop, Sketchbook, or Gimp. Standard formats make that possible.If your game company is poor, there are some cheaper products that can get the job done. Blender is the single most featureful. However, their UI is notorious for being painful to learn. It has improved over the years but it's roughly like going from D to B-. At least it is highly customizable, so if you're willing to learn how it works, you can convert it into what you need. We're still way ahead on the feature count, though; you usually use Blender because it's free, not because it's ideal.There are some other modelers (Silo? TrueSpace? Cinema4d?), but I don't know whether they are used for games. If you learn to use any one, though, the skills do transfer, so learn what you can and the next one will be easier.
