What Professional Sport Team Has Had The Most Playoff Sweeps In History

Who is the best ever professional sports champion from your town?

I can’t answer this because I came from a city that had great pro teams in nearly every sport. (Most would point to the 1927 Babe Ruth-Lou Gehrig New York Yankees as the greatest professional baseball team ever, although others might claim the 1936 team -Joe DiMaggio’s rookie season - or the 1961 team with Maris and Mantle.) There were outstanding championship football teams - the NY Giants and the Super Bowl-winning NY Jets of 1969, ice hockey franchises - the NY Rangers and the NY Islanders, and basketball winning franchises - the 1969 NY Knickerbockers and the NY Nets. In fact, many people claimed NY fans were “spoiled” because the city had so many great teams. Some used that as justification for expanding different sports leagues. To pick one team from all those great athletes would be impossible and unfair to those who performed for the others. The worst, however was without a doubt the 1962–64 New York Mets. The “Amazing Mets” were not just the worst team in New York sports history, they were also the most endearing and entertaining team to that point in pro sports history.

What are the pros and cons of the playoffs system in sports?

There is a huge con to even how some systems work. For example, in MLB, the Tampa Bay Rays are 87–70. The Cleveland Indians are 88–69. The Indians lead the AL Central by 15.5 games, and the Rays won't make the postseason. They have a 1 win difference. I'm not saying there should be a punishment for good teams being good, but it always does seem unfortunate for the Rays to play in the same division with the Yankees and the Red Sox.And the Wild Card Game. Sure, it's supposed to be a 1 game, but it seems idiotic for a 162 game season, to boil to 1 game. If your pitcher gets injured unexpectedly, sucks to be you, your season's done. However, the best of 7 which is usually done in most sports does work well. It allows for comebacks and forces you to play your best in all games, no matter what your lead is. Instances of reverse sweeps are always amazing, and it seems like blown leads are the norm nowadays (Indians….)

Why is it the bad sports teams never seem to add better players, but great teams always add good players?

Here is one thing I know to be true: when one highly touted player becomes a bust, go ahead and blame the player. When ten highly touted players in the same organization become busts, it’s not the players’ fault.Everybody who gets taken in the first round has the talent to be an NFL starter - except maybe Brandon Weeden. Whether they develop into a starter depends on their personality, the team’s ability to develop talent, and their ability to put the player in a position where he can succeed, on and off the field. Some organizations are really bad at hiring people to make the football decisions. They’re just clueless. They hire bad GMs, bad coaches, bad trainers. It’s just all wrong, from top to bottom. What do these franchises have in common: Baltimore Ravens, Dallas Cowboys, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and San Francisco 49ers? They got a new owner, and won a Super Bowl within a few years.Ownership matters.

Has an MLB team ever gone undefeated in the post season?

Yes. It’s happened many times. However, there’s a qualification that goes with that statement….Before the 1969 season, MLB’s postseason consisted of just one series, the World Series. The National League champion met the American League champion. Therefore, any team that swept the World Series during that time had a perfect postseason. But, since divisional play began in 1969, I can recall just one team that went undefeated in the MLB postseason…. the 1976 Cincinnati Reds. They swept the Phillies 3–0 in the NLCS and swept the Yankees 4–0 in the World Series. That’s it.I suppose that we could extrapolate that into another question: “Will there be an MLB team that has a perfect postseason in the future?” My answer to that question would be that it’s highly unlikely. Even the 2014 Kansas City Royals, who won the ALWCP and then swept both the Division Series and ALCS, eventually lost in the World Series, game one, and lost the Fall Classic in seven games to the Giants. For teams who play in the wild card playoff, they’d have to go 12–0. For teams that win their division, they must go 11–0. If there is a team that pulls off the feat, that team would probably be mentioned for years as the greatest team ever in MLB.Having an undefeated postseason in hockey or basketball is also an incredible feat. I’ve done some research on the NHL and I believe it’s never been done. I KNOW that it’s never been done in the NBA. In fact, in the 2017 NBA Finals, the Golden State Warriors came one game away from having the NBA’s first perfect postseason. They lost game four and won the title in game five.

Has an MLB team ever swept the postseason?

It’s happened several times, especially when, before the 1969 season, the only postseason series MLB had was the World Series. The first MLB team to be undefeated in the postseason were the 1907 Chicago Cubs, whom won the Fall Classic over the Detroit Tigers in five games, but, one of those games was called a “tie” game because, back then, all games were played during the day and they ran out of daylight to complete the game. The 1914 World Series featured the first four-game sweep, with the Boston Braves beating the Philadelphia As. The 1922 World Series featured another tie game in addition to a four-game sweep, NY Giants over the NY Yankees. The Yankees swept the Cubs in the 1932 Fall Classic. The Yankees recorded two four-game sweeps in a row in 1938 (over the Cubs) and 1939 (over the Reds). There were four more four-game sweeps before 1969: 1950, 1954, 1963 and 1966.The next and last MLB team to have a perfect postseason were the 1976 Cincinnati Reds, who swept the Phillies in three games in the NLCS and the Yankees four games in the World Series. Since then, there have been a few instances where the team that won the title only lost one game along the way.
